The Florida man stories are hilarious. Theres even a special account on Twitter dedicated to this sort of news, the ever-growing list of local stories from those residents of the Sunshine State who engage in some of the most outlandish antics out there. Its true entertainment, one that should make anyone laugh. Yet, this one Florida man story isnt so funny. A high school principal at Spanish River High School in the Palm Beach School District decided a year ago to take the odd position of refusing to declare the Holocaust a factual and historical event. William Latson is the name of the principal in question and hes now out of that job, having been reassigned due to the uproar this has caused.
The Palm Beach Post posted excerpts of those email exchanges he had with a concerned parent. The parent was wondering what the school curriculum was concerning this dark period of human history. While Latson had apologized for the wording, it wasnt enough. It should also be made clear that no one believes Latson is a Holocaust denier or anti-Semite, just someone who dabbled in sheer folly in trying to apply the two equal sides protocol as if this were a debatable subject. Its not. The Holocaust happened. There are remnants of the concentration camps in Europe. There are scores of interviews with survivors providing a record of this most terrible crime and there are thousands of such survivors who live in and around the school district (via Sun Sentinel):
A principal in heavily Jewish Boca Raton is out of a job because he refused to say the Holocaust was a real historical event.
Spanish River High School Principal William Latson told a parent that as a public school official he needed to remain politically neutral sensitive to both Holocaust education advocates and people who deny the destruction of six million Jews during World War II.
The Palm Beach County School District didnt see it that way and on Monday assigned Latson to another, unspecified position.
His email exchange with the parent created a furor in Boca Raton, the home of many Holocaust survivors and their descendants, and spurred an investigation by the school district.
A new principal has not yet been named.
Mr. Latson made a grave error in judgment in the verbiage he wrote in an email stating, I cant say the Holocaust is a factual, historical event because I am not in a position to do so as a school district employee. In addition to being offensive, the principals statement is not supported by either the School District Administration or the School Board," the district said Monday.
In an email exchange last year with the parent, Latson wrote:
Not everyone believes the Holocaust happened and you have your thoughts but we are a public school and not all of our parents have the same beliefs so they will react differently."
This wasnt that hard, sir. I mean of all the things to lose your job over. Youre going to go down in flames in what appears to be a move to respect the wishes of
apparent Holocaust denier parents in the school district. As weve said before, who cares what they think; theyre wrong. Those who have that position live in la la land and peddle a myth thats heavily associated with anti-Semitism. There is no two equal sides to this question, man. Even the village idiot would know not to debate the Holocaust.
In an email exchange last year with the parent, Latson wrote:

Appeasement never works in the long term.
Facts of history should never become beliefs.
Ooops. I should have used etc. My English teachers are spinning.
It sounds like a mixture of postmodern subjectivism and catering to the “feelings” of a favored minority group (Muslim extremists). There is the belief that there is no truth, or at at least the truth is unknowable, and combine that with catering to a favorite minority that denies the Holocaust. I think this will drive the left to aggressively deny the Holocaust someday soon, so that Holocaust denial will become a core part of political correctness. This will be a small jump from the thinly veiled antisemitism that already is common with the left.
Bingo.
No, you are wrong. Principal is the highest position in a school. If they had given him a promotion they would him probably made him Superintendent who is over all schools in a county. They could and should have fired him, but they didn’t because he is black.
Yeah but he’s black, get it?
I do believe that denying that the Holocaust occurred, does indeed make you a Holocaust denier.
Did he think that as a public school official he needed to remain "politically neutral" - sensitive to both those who believe the earth is round and those who believe the earth is flat?
exactly.
Wonder he teaches the moon landing.
Florida IS the nation’s rubber room.
Public schools are out of control. New York administrators are getting paid $300,000 by taxpayers. I hope Trump’s main initiative in 2021 is to clean up this mess.
Sounds to me like he was a politicallly correct bureaucrat who was following orders to not offend the Jew-hating holocaust deniers in the school (..cough..muslims..cough).
Lets see if he ends up in some capacity on the board of education. I understand what youre saying.
Blacks are the only group in the US allowed to have their own separate version of "truth".
Under-representation in STEM is a consequence.
Don’t bother drpix, my son went to Spanish River until his last year and transferred to Boca High for his senior year (6 years ago) and this clown was the reason why. The details stay with me. As far as I’m concerned, his true character got revealed.
Holly, as one who had contact with him 6 years ago because of my son, don’t bother defending him. His true character just got revealed.
His best case is that he went along with a system that required him to say something he believed was factually and morally wrong. If he’s not a Holocaust denier, he’s a classic example of how you get Nazi death camps in the middle of a supposedly civilized country.
Get a clue, Latson. You are no different than low level Nazi scum. That defense didn’t work at Nuremberg.
But your personal experience with the guy seems to confirm the suspicion of his true character that my question was directed at. Thanks.
