I agree, mostly. But one of the reasons I imagine for statutory rape charges is that young people don’t have the mental capacity to understand the long term effects of their decisions. It is easy for them to be lured into sex with the offer of free beer and a joint. Just imagine the lure of going on private planes with famous people to a fancy island with champagne and cocaine.
Correct. A young person doesn’t have the maturity to make life altering decisions. And being sexual and with who is most definitely life altering decisions.
Of course there is a gamble it won’t result in lifelong results that includes pregnancy, health concerns, or more horrible consequences.
They may thank they can understand. But that is a decision a young person’s life isn’t developed enough to truly comprehend. Like any other legal binding contract.
