Former governor of Rio paid $2m bribe to win 2016 Olympics — defeating Chicago’s bid in the process
Chicago Tribune ^

The former governor said he bought the votes for Rio to get to "the second stage of the vote" and that "no votes were bought after that."

Rio was chosen over Chicago, Tokyo and Madrid to host the 2016 Games. Chicago’s bid, considered by most a strong one, was the first to be eliminated, despite the presence of then-U.S. President Barack Obama at the IOC meeting in Copenhagen.

It’s like bribing someone to rape you.

The 1996 Games in Atlanta basically broke even, which is quite an accomplishment for Billy Payne and the organizing committee. He of course went on to run Augusta National for over a decade. Looks like he’s now moved on.

Yep, ValJar had bought up a lot of low income housing tracts with the intention of selling the land for Olympic venue construction. Imagine the money she would’ve made in that transaction.

Rio used the Chicago way. Hilarious.

I still smile thinking about the media reaction when Chicago was the first city DENIED the Olympics....all in the wake of “Obama is a god” hype.

One of his first of many epic fails.

Saw a funny follow-up to Atlanta where residents were suing the city because after buying licenses to sell sh!t to tourists, the visitors were basically enclosed in an area where they’d be safe from the natives (so many sold nothing).

When the Super Bowl was held a few miles north of me in Giants Stadium here in NJ, the local towns complained all they got was overtime bills for their cops. Fortunately it won’t be back; hosting it was a concession for building a new stadium (replacing a perfectly good one), and the weather concerns were justified - while the game was fine, many tourists were stuck the next day when snow hit.

Blessing in disguise. The Olympics would have been a humongous budget drain.

As if Illinois does not already have a huge, unpayable deficit...

Let Rio have them. The Olympics is nothing but a money pit. Build all those venues only to see them in ruin 10 years later.

Yeah, the Obamas got beaten at their own game. Too funny.

“Oddly the Rio Olympics were a financial disaster for Rio.”

Not a total loss - they got air conditioning on their buses.

I remember how he acted like his celeb persona would bring it home - he was handily beat by the professional cheaters! So arrogant he thought it would be awarded above board. Ha.

Lucky for Chicago if this is true. Olympics are a money pit with no upside.

Yes, one person who’d bought a lot of land which would have been valuable if Chicago had won the bid jumped into the river.

Yes, was very surprised that BO & OW ‘walked’ away from that one.

Several on this thread have mentioned the loss when ‘hosting’ the Olympics.

Don’t really think the speculators that buy/bought up potential resale property are or were worried about the tax payers footing the bill (AGAIN)
