Sen. Ted Cruz responded Thursday night after former NFL quarterback Colin Kaepernick posted a passage earlier on the Fourth of July from a famous speech by Civil War-era abolitionist Frederick Douglass. The passage Kaepernick cites is from Douglass speech, What to the Slave is the Fourth of July? Douglass delivered to the speech at a meeting of the Rochester Ladies Anti-Slavery Society in Rochester, N.Y., on July 5, 1852 nearly nine years before the Civil War began.
But the former San Francisco 49ers signal-caller includes a video montage of a longer version of the speech, accompanied by drawings depicting American slaves and photos from the Civil War era. Interspersed are videos from recent years, showing police using force against people of color.
You quote a mighty and historic speech by the great abolitionist Frederick Douglass, Sen. Cruz writes in response, but, without context, many modern readers will misunderstand.
Cruz goes on to acknowledge that slavery was an abomination in the U.S. but was eliminated through the efforts of Douglass and so many other heroes. The senator then asserts that Douglass was not anti-American; he was, rightly and passionately, anti-slavery. As evidence, Cruz quotes another portion of the same Douglass speech:
Allow me to say, in conclusion, notwithstanding the dark picture I have this day presented, of the state of the nation, I do not despair of this country. There are forces in operation, which must inevitably, work the downfall of slavery. The arm of the Lord is not shortened, and the doom of slavery is certain. I, therefore, leave off where I began, with hope. While drawing encouragement from the Declaration of Independence, the great principles it contains, and the genius of American Institutions, my spirit is also cheered by the obvious tendencies of the age.

The 4th of July is the first great fact in your nation's history-the very ring-bolt in the chain of your yet undeveloped destiny. Pride and patriotism, not less than gratitude, prompt you to celebrate and to hold it in perpetual remembrance. I have said that the Declaration of Independence is the RINGBOLT to the chain of your nation's destiny; so, indeed, I regard it. The principles contained in that instrument are saving principles. Stand by those principles, be true to them on all occasions, in. all places, against all foes, and at whatever cost.
And still another:
They loved their country better than their own private interests; and, though this is not the highest form of human excellence, all will concede that it is a rare virtue, and that when it is exhibited, it ought to command respect. He who will, intelligently, lay down his life for his country, is a man whom it is not in human nature to despise. Your fathers staked their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor, on the cause of their country. In their admiration of liberty, they lost sight of all other interests.
Go read the entire speech. It is awesome. He does tell the truth about peoples' attitudes back then and what needed to change. It has changed.
In before ‘lying Ted’.
bttt
I never hear ANY leftist, liberal full-of-hatred Democrats invoking God in their comments. Yet, Frederick Douglass respectfully did so in righting the wrongs of the past. And, it is the past. We are far better than that and time to move forward, Kaepernick. Now.
The most important context of that speech is that it was a thinly-veiled rebuke of the hypocrisy of so many people even in the abolitionist movement. While they strove to eliminate slavery for their own moral reasons, many of them were adamantly opposed to the idea that emancipated slaves should be treated as equal citizens under the law in NORTHERN states.
I’m glad that Trump won - but Cruz is no slouch.
“He who will, intelligently, lay down his life for his country, is a man whom it is not in human nature to despise.”
For the record, the all White Union army during July 1, 2, & 3 of 1863 at Gettysburg incurred 5,291 KIA and mortally wounded casualties. They carried out the expressed policies of their government to end slavery, a government they elected three years before they died.
CK the third tier has been got ratioed and schooled yesterday by many. Made the day extra special
Not even amusing. Ted had a tough enough time getting re-elected
That flag is also hated by the Brexit opponents.
I agree with you. I do remember he seemed overly flattered when the establishment started backing him because they were desperate not to let Trump win, but if he keeps up this level of fight, maybe he can challenge Pence for the nomination.
The speech was given in 1852. If was easy for abolitionists in the north to call for an end to slavery but not do anything else
Eight years later the south seceded just as they promised they would when Lincoln was elected president
If it wasnt for Frederick Douglass, Colin Crapernick would have his wish and be living in Africa right now. Lincoln wanted to send the freed slaves back, Douglass met with him and asked him not to, so he didnt.
Actually, this half-White Linda Sarsour puppet wouldn’t even exist without Frederick Douglass.
Mr. Kaepernick you are not a slave, you weren’t a slave, you didn’t play one on TV. You just need something to bitch about and keep yourself in the public eye.
I don’ trust Cruz; his father killed Kennedy.
With all the outside money Beto had, plus the free PR the MSM and HBO gave him Its not really surprising it was a close race.
That's because they knew that Lincoln and the Republicans would extend the hated tariffs.
