“Communists never laugh. “

I tried to find a show I saw about humor in The Third Reich. It interviewed standup comics and humorists and the people who know those who went to concentration camps for telling a joke. (Just one joke could be enough.) I couldn’t locate it. One incident was a guy with trained chimps. Somebody seeing his act and from the Nazi party asked if he could get the chimps to do the Nazi salute. He said yes. But when everybody laughed that was too much. They inducted the guy into the army and sent him to the Eastern front; a virtual death sentence, especially for an old guy who was well past his prime. His wife was telling the story.

This is the Left. They can’t take being laughed at.

This clip is from The Lives of Others, a film set in East Germany shortly before the Demolition of the Berlin Wall. You can see the Socialist gift of humor very clearly.

Your story reminds me of a famous story about a book binder during the Stalin regime.

He printed a fawning book about the glories of Stalinism, as he was instructed to do by Party authorities.

One page had an official photo of dear leader Yusef Vissoniorovitch Stalin.
The next page had a photo of a smiling kulak chopping wood.

When held up to the light, the smiling kulak’s axe was aimed at Stalin’s head.

Party bigwigs didn’t get the joke, and bookbinder was promptly dispatched to the gulag, or firing squad, I forget which.
Punishment was swift & severe, though.
