SACRAMENTO, Calif. (AP) — Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law Wednesday a bill making California the first state to ban workplace and school discrimination against black people for wearing hairstyles such as braids, twists and locks.

The law by Democratic Sen. Holly Mitchell of Los Angeles, a black woman who wears her hair in locks, makes California the first state to explicitly say that those hairstyles are associated with race and therefore protected against discrimination in the workplace and in schools.

“We are changing the course of history, hopefully, across this country by acknowledging that what has been defined as professional hair styles and attire in the work place has historically been based on a Euro-centric model — based on straight hair,” Mitchell said.

You’re also not allowed to notice any smell coming from any particular hairstyles.

Gov. Gavin Newsom signed into law Wednesday a bill making California the first state to ban workplace and school discrimination against black people for wearing hairstyles such as braids, twists and locks.

I never knew these were "ethnic" hairstyles. And locks are just plain disgusting, no matter what the skin color or eye shape of those wearing it is.

"...based on a Euro-centric model--based on straight hair."

Gee, I thought that straight hair was typical of Asians. People of European ethnicity (and other Caucasians) have hair of all types. I have been cursed with hair that is neither straight nor curly, and is not the same on different parts of my head. My "style" is to keep it short, because it will not behave and I do not have patience for spending hours on hair styling.

A black woman with a lot of braids told me the other day that it "only" took two hours to have her hair done. Eek!

Wait... ONLY black people can wear idiotic hair styles? Discrimination. What about mohawks? I’ve yet to see a real Mohawk wear a mohawk.

Like the 15 dollar minimum wage, if it’s legal, an employer like myself will not even have an interview with a person with smelly hair down to his/her butt. So, what has he/she gained?

The law of unintended consequences is REAL.

California is, essentially, outlawing employers and employment one step at a time. As we see, they are moving out in droves. Go Weatherby!

Thought control is people control.

By the way, the opposite of "discriminate" is "indiscriminate."

I remember this coming up decades ago.

I remember the classic line “That’s me! That’s my style!”

Sounded sensible to me. California is right for a change.

Only problem would be if it interferes with the job in some way.

What’s the difference between a politician and a pimp?

Once upon a time I happened to be behind Dennis Hof at a gas station.

Struck up a conversation with him.

Told him I couldn't understand his leaving the brothel business to go into politics.

"Running a brothel is a perfectly honest business where people pay to get screwed, and they get screwed.

Politics is a totally dishonest endeavor where people pay to not get screwed and they still get screwed!"

Pimps actually work for a living, at least compared to politicians.

Wait until a couple of them get their braids caught in a PTO or some other type of machinery.

That "racial statement" wont seem nearly as important when they're going through that process.

Food service laws should make hairnets mandatory again that cover the ethnic “hairstyle” to protect the consumer from the potential contamination of the food being served. The law cannot protect those hairstyles over the safety of the consumer. If they do this means that California is way beyond repair (which it may be).
