Over the last decade, both Los Angeles Countys sprawling Metro system and smaller lines have hemorrhaged bus riders as passengers have fled for more convenient options mostly, driving.
Southern Californians are capitalizing on a stronger economy by buying cars in record numbers, experts say. They also point to half a dozen other factors putting pressure on bus systems, including falling immigration rates, rising rents that have pushed low-income families to more remote areas, and a law that allows immigrants in the country illegally to apply for drivers licenses.
Dropping ridership follows years of complaints about bus routes that are rarely as fast or reliable as driving and often require long waits, multiple transfers and delays in rush-hour traffic. More recently, a surge in the regions homeless population has sparked concerns about safety and sanitation.
Ridership has fallen on almost all local bus systems, including routes in Santa Monica, the San Gabriel Valley, the Antelope Valley and Orange County, mirroring a national slump in bus ridership.

I think we can apply for an extension.
Large parts of LA are worse than third-world s-holes.
I saw an article over the weekend that in California, the homeless basically ride for free because the bus drivers don't want to deal with the craziness of a confrontation, and they know the cops won't help.
Additionally, in San Francisco the homeless not only ride for free, but they are using the buses and bus stops for bathrooms. One woman interviewed said she quit riding because the buses now smell like sh** and piss.
LOL. That good economy causes people to buy cars. That’s awful.
And then there’s “falling immigration rates.” Go to the link in the article, and it’s not talking about immigration from Mexico, it’s talking about “Californias population growth is the slowest in recorded history.” So many people are leaving that horrible place that not even record numbers of illegal immigrants can compensate.
And my favorite: a law that allows immigrants in the country illegally to apply for drivers licenses. They can drive. They can make enough money to buy cars, apparently. So they are causing more global warming. Solution is easy: Stop issuing drivers’ licenses to illegals. LOL. They won’t do that.
No sense of irony in this article at all.
Have they started having the tent campers move away from bus stops yet?
So the city got bigger and the government is running less buses?
Who could have guessed that ridership would have dropped off?
I cant imagine wanting to abandon public transportation. It has the finest people...
Boo Hoo!
The places the buses go get filthier, more disease-ridden, and more dangerous. I’d venture a guess that the same goes for some of the bus riders. So fewer people riding the bus is a surprise to these geniuses?
They should run a freeway through Beverly Hills.
Do the bums $h!t on busses now, too?
Even “Freddie the Freeloader” would be embarrassed by these new bums.
And Emmett Kelly
That's because 1) I get cheap "senior" fares 2) because I hate "stop & go" driving and 3) because parking is impossible to find and costs a fortune.
First a homeless shelter, then a methadone clinic and *then* a freeway.
In NYC, even Daddy Warbucks walked something on the order of 87 blocks to work each day.
Yeah, yeah, obligatory...: Missing Persons - Walking in L.A.
(FWIW, I think Dale Bozzio is from the same town as Elizabeth Short, the unfortunate "Black Dalia".)
Last time I went to SF, my son and I rode the BART.
There was a homeless bum sleeping in one of the cars, stinking to high heaven, so we went to a different car. After a while, he woke up and came towards the car we were in. I was ready to move back a car if he came that far, but he stopped in the coupling area and urinated.
On top of that, BART stations in the city now smell like outhouses, and the escalators often do not work.
Why would we ever want to ride BART again? Liberal policies have resulted in it becoming unrideable for decent people.
Nobody rides those things if they can help it. Not anymore.
Did they mention any of that in the article? Strange
Good summary.
