Beirut:: Fighting raged in northwest Syria on Thursday with clashes between regime forces and jihadist-led fighters killing 130 combatants in two days, a war monitor said.
The Idlib region, home to some three million people, is supposed to be protected by a months-old international truce deal, but it has come under increased bombardment by the regime and its Russian ally since late April.
On the southwestern edges of the jihadist-run enclave, bombardment and fierce fighting since Tuesday have killed 89 anti-regime fighters and left 41 dead on the government side, the Syrian Observatory for Human Rights said.
This included at least 14 anti-regime fighters and 21 pro-government forces killed early Thursday, it said.
The fighting has centred around the village of Tal Meleh in the north of Hama province, according to the Britain-based monitoring group.
"The clashes are ongoing," with both regime and Russian war planes pounding the area, Observatory chief Rami Abdel Rahman said.
On Wednesday, 17 civilians were killed in regime bombardment on several parts of the rebel region, he said.
Russia and rebel-backer Turkey brokered an agreement intended to stave off an all-out regime assault on Idlib in September, but that deal was never fully implemented as jihadists refused to withdraw from the planned buffer zone.
The Hayat Tahrir al-Sham group, led by ex-members of Al-Qaeda's former Syria affiliate, extended its control over the region, which spans most of Idlib province as well as slivers of the adjacent provinces of Latakia, Hama and Aleppo.
The Syrian government and Russia have upped their bombardment of the region since late April, killing more than 400 civilians, according to the Observatory.
Syria's war has killed more than 3,70,000 people and displaced millions at home and abroad since it started in 2011 with the repression of anti-government protests.
Hope Trump wont make inadvisable decision to help McCains bloody freedom fighters, like what he did last year, based on the queer gas attack report provided by the white helmets.
I agree. Fighting in Syria or against Iran only helps the Saudis - the same guys who created Al Qaeda and whose nationals flew into the WTC towers
NOT our war. Need to stay out.
100% agree with you. Ditto for Iran
They M’s are killing each other? Works for me.
Saudis did not create AQ but left wing western universities. The Saudis and Morrocans have long rejected or destroyed their terrorists that we then welcome in our schools
The only things that the Saudis object to about any Al Queda types are (a) don’t oppose the Saudi royalty and (2) don’t make any mayhem inside Saudi Arabia. Other than that, religiously, there is less than six degrees of separation between the Wahabi and Al Queda types.
Idlib is the District 9 of Syria, where the hard core islamists were given asylum with their families by the busloads when the Syrians and Russians cleaned them out of the cities and towns they held in cruel bondage. Civilians were their shields. Looks like Idlib civilians are now suffering the price, but there is probably no other way to defeat this scourge, Except giving them British passports, perhaps
The saudis created al qaeda which espouses the same wahabbi philosophy
The worse thing could have been them getting American passports
Why is the Syrian government the only one in the region that is ever called a “regime”? Why not the Saudi “regime” or the Turkish “regime,” etc.
Good point. Newspeak yo make us think that the elected President is illegitimate, as opposed to the Saudi absolute kingdom
Sounds as if the Turkish terrorist proxies are getting their butt whipped by the U.N. recognized elected government.
Let Allah sort it out.
Granted the Kalifate is a 8th century Saudi idea, however Al Qaeda is more complex than that. There is a chain of support of Al Qaeda at the Hamburg cell and ASU that would not have been possible without left wing political sponsorship of free education.
Every time you see a terror attack, you see a western left wing university trained terrorist.
Al Zwahiri in fact is the one that is still alive and relevant, and he worked for the FSB in Chechnya. Bin Laden, the only one who happens to be 100% Saud and who disagreed with Al Zwahiri’s method of bombing other muslims is done away with.
The Caliphate is a 7th century Islamic idea, not a purely Saudi onr.
What is specifically Saudi is the Wahabbi state formed in the 1700s as a marriage alliance between al said and al wahhab.
The Hamburg cell etc of al qaeda is Saudi in origin
The caliphate is a 7th century Muslim idea. Al qaeda is a result of a marriage alliance between al wahhab and al saud
Hi.
Imho, not our monkeys, not our circus.
Let Allah sort it out.
