Ireland: Leo Varadkar: No Brexit transition without a deal

Irish PM also dismisses claims Ireland might negotiate bilaterally on controversial backstop plan

Irish PM delivered a blow to Boris Johnson Thursday as he insisted the U.K. will not be granted a Brexit transition period if it leaves the EU without a deal.

Johnson, who is the favorite to clinch the Tory crown and become the next British PM next month, argued during a televised TV debate on Tuesday that Brussels would grant a transition to smooth the U.K. departure from the bloc, even after a no-deal Brexit.

He has also put renegotiating the controversial Northern Irish backstop arrangements at the heart of his campaign to win the backing of Conservative Party MPs and members.

But arriving at the European Council summit in Brussels, Varadkar said neither proposition is possible. “There is no Withdrawal Agreement without a backstop and there is no implementation period without a Withdrawal Agreement,” said Varadkar, using the alternative terminology for a transition period.

...Varakdar also made clear that Dublin would not be willing to negotiate bilaterally to avoid the backstop...

Varadkar insisted there could be no further extension to the current Brexit deadline of October31

Johnson has insisted he will take the U.K. out of the EU by the end of October, deal or no deal. But the two remaining candidates in the race — Michael Gove and Jeremy Hunt — have said they would prefer an extension to the negotiations if a deal might be clinched soon after the deadline.

But in a blow to their hopes, Varakdar said there is “very much a strong view across the EU that there shouldn’t be any more extensions.”

...“What won’t be entertained is an extension for further negotiations or further indicative votes. The time for that has long since passed,” he said.

The Irish just said that the UK won't get a transition period, so the UK won't have to put in $39 billion for that transition period. So, he's doing England-Wales a favor

Born on 18 January 1979, in the Rotunda Hospital, Dublin, Varadkar is the third child and only son of Ashok and Miriam (née Howell) Varadkar. His father was born in Bombay (now Mumbai), India, and moved to the United Kingdom in the 1960s, to work as a doctor. His mother, born in Dungarvan, County Waterford, met her future husband while working as a nurse in Slough.

He's the Irish PM and yeah, he's half-Irish. Besides this, nearly all Irish support the government's stance on Brexit - they don't want to be bullied by the uk

How will Ireland benefit by splitting from a UK alliance? What does the EU do for Ireland economically?

What does the EU do for Ireland economically? It sends them a ton of third world migrants to support.

The Republic of ireland does NOT have a UK alliance - it hasn't had one since 1920 when it stopped being a colony of England

right now 12% of Irish exports go to the UK, as compared to 44% that go to the other EU countries

The #1 thing membership of the club gave is removing the dependency on the UK

in addition

  1. The country has been a net recipient of European funds since the joined the EU, and will remain so throughout the duration of the current EU financial plan, the 2014-2020 Multiannual Financial Framework (MFF). This basically means they get more money out of the EU than we put in.
  2. According to European Commission figures, Ireland’s net gain from EU budgets has been €44.6 billion since 1976.
  3. Ireland has a small, open economy that’s heavily reliant on exports. Being part of the EU's Single Market makes it easier for Irish businesses to trade on both European and international markets
  4. They moved away from agricultural exports to the UK to more hi-tech because they had access to a no-tariff market and regulations

By eliminating tariffs and allowing free movement it has helped the Irish economy boom far more than a small country could otherwise

40 years ago the Irish were eating potatoes, today they’re richer than the UK, I think they’ve done ok.

Since when does Ireland dictate what the UK can or cannot do?

It isn’t dictating. Ireland is telling the UK that no deal means no transition.

Just leave. No deal. No hard border with Ireland. Lots of ID checks everywhere to make sure everybody in the U.K. is there legally and swift deportation for those who are not. Stiff penalties for businesses that employ illegals.

Done.

Leave it to the E.U. to build s hard border in Ireland if they want one.

Unelected? As always since 1902, and usually for 150 years before that. the Prime Minister will be a duly elected member of the House of Commons. Those who speak of an ‘unelected Prime Minister’ are usually conditioned by Presidential systems.

Changing the Prime Minister in the middle of a Parliament is not unusual. There have been seven such instances since the Second World War.

What was opaque until recently was the system the Tory Party used for choosing a new leader. Now much more open, and thus more entertaining.
