President Trump approved military strikes against Iran in retaliation for downing an American surveillance drone, but pulled back from launching them on Thursday night after a day of escalating tensions.
As late as 7 p.m., military and diplomatic officials were expecting a strike, after intense discussions and debate at the White House among the presidents top national security officials and congressional leaders, according to multiple senior administration officials involved in or briefed on the deliberations.

Fake news.
Tenor and context distorted as per normal.
As if MSN has a clue. Are they tracking late night pizza deliveries to the Pentagon?
The track record on that metric is abysmal.
Approved but pulled it back, oh yeah. Absolutely #FakeNews! The president of the United States has so called emergency war powers. Long time ago USS Samuel B. Roberts while on patrol at the Straits of Hormuz stocked a Iranian mine in retaliation operation praying mantis U.S. Navy almost wiped out the Iranian navy.
Maggie Haberman is a lying skank who should never be given credibility.
As if MSN would know, or could be trusted to tell the truth...
“Pulls back” was apparently the catchphrase tonight. It appears in almost all the MSM coverage. I’m guessing he gave them tentative approval, because preparation was necessary, then made (at least temporarily) a decision against it. I remember a similar situation that turned out to be a feint before one of the Syria attacks.
Making it look like a backdown, while painting him as indecisive and confused is the storyline though, so there we go.
I also can’t help noting that this info started leaking shortly after Adam Schiff left the briefing this afternoon.
I trust POTUS. If he called for and then called off a strike he had a damned good reason.
There are a lot of possibilities. One is that Iran showed him drone wreckage inside their waters.
He seemed truly surprised by this as in there are obviously back channel talks going on.
It bothers me that Nervous Nancy is against attack though.
All I can say is that “if” this report is true he had a damned good reason.
I agree with you, except it’s a little small and doesn’t glow in the dark.
If somebody in the inner circle leaked this, they should be fired. And prosecuted.
In chess there’s so called harsh move results to error but if U.S. drone determined it was shootdown not above Iranian territory I’d expect retaliatory action. Long time ago an Iranian mine intended for commercial vessels passing through Straits of Hormuz damaged USS Samuel B. Roberts then came operation praying mantis almost wiped out the Iranian navy. Whatever it kinda complex we dunno how Iranian would retaliate what weapons they’re bragging, if Mr Trump would order to attack Iran it’d be massive and swift using air launch precision munitions.
MSN??? How do they know?
My best guess is that Trump is keeping Iran on edge.
Something else occurred to me. Trump could be smoking out traitors amongst the congress critters.
Maybe President Trump discovered that Russian “advisers” in Iran used a Russian mobile launcher so send one of their surface-to-air missiles up to destroy the drone. I think this is a trap. It spells out a very dicey situation and requires a well-planned response. In short, Russia is involved in this. In fact, China is involved too.
That is as valid a conjecture as any I have thought of. (I didn’t consider yours)
Oh dear Lord, can we Freepers all just go to bed now. It's late.
Trump could be smoking out traitors amongst the congress critters.
I think hes always constructing what we pool players call a two way shot. Both defensive and offensive. In chess, its called forking - you make your opponent choose which piece he will lose. In military and political strategy, its a win-win.
Our President is a master.
