That’s a prominent and disgraceful Chinese quality:

Utter indifference to the excruciating and totally needless suffering of another living thing.

It’s totally off the hook.

Stories like this permit me to care about Nanking much less.

Please, let me caution you, do not make a broad judgment like this which implies "all Chinese, all the time" lack empathy or even commmon human feeling.

It is unjust, like insinuating that all Americans are buggers and baby-crushers.

In every society, there are perpetrators, and there are victims (not to be confused with eac other), and a whole lot of people in the middle who are involved only partially in this evil, or only a little, or not at all.
