Why Now on Reparations? Why not between 1930-46? 1949-52? 1954-80? 1987-94?

Posted on 06/20/2019 2:27:03 AM PDT by cotton1706

The democrats had control of Congress during these years, and for many years with overwhelming numbers, AND with democrat presidents.

The answer: because all the southern (and northern) racist, segregationist democrats would have stopped it.

Senators like Russell Long, Fritz Hollings, Herman Talmadge, Harry Byrd, Robert Byrd, J William Fulbright, Sam Ervin, etc.

Let's talk about Joe Biden's and Ted Kennedy's buddies!

No surprise here, Reparations have always been part of the Rats bucket list. IMO

Not actually a productive line of thought.

The fact is that the people and politicians of earlier eras simply didn't have the necessary "awareness" (or "wokeness," to use their term) to even consider the pros and cons of reparations.

Addressing the legitimacy or illegitimacy of reparations from this angle of attack serves only to further legitimize the issue - and is "water on the mills" of the pro-reparationists.

Rather, reasonable conservatives should attempt to wrest control of the narrative from the hands of the leftists and pursue other tactics (e.g., the impossibility of determining, today, who would be eligible to receive reparations and/or who would be required to pay them).

Regards,

I disagree. During the 1930-52 period at least, there were slaves still living.

At this point, all former slaves are dead, as are the slavemasters. And all their children are dead, and their children’s children, and most of their children’s children’s children.

When it would have done the most good, the Congress failed to act...because of the democrats.

Even though reparations cannot pass against a GOP majority in either house or over the opposition of a GOP President, the issue can be used to stir up Black voters so as to boost their loyalty and turnout for the Democrats. And when the Democrats could enact reparations, they will not for fear of incurring the lasting animosity of most non-Black voters.

All this reparations talk might end up driving a lot of recent immigrants from Asia and Latin America to vote for Republicans.

Is this an argument for reparations? Pointing out that that these would have stopped it sounds like a complaint.

You are exactly correct about stirring up black voters. My guess would be that President Trump is more popular in the black community then the rats are comfortable with, so they are trying to bring some of them back to the plantation with the offer of reparations.

Oh, I’m not naive. I know why the democrats are bringing it up now. For politics of course.

I just wanted to point out that the democrats had MANY opportunities and didn’t.

So, are you saying that if you are not "racist" that you should support reparations to prove it and to make Democrats look bad?

Again, are you saying that a Republican majority should have reparations as one of its issues?

No, not at all.

Democrats want to whitewash their history. 40 acres and a mule could have happened. But democrats voted as a block for a hundred years and more.

It needs to be pointed out that for all the years when they had control of the congress, they did nothing.

that's easy - because they have no platform. And, they've been trying hard for 3 years now to rebrand Republicans as a racist party of old white men, (all the references to hitler and CCs lately) enabling them to segway into the good ole reliable plantation race baiting to mobilize the low information grievance voter

But for those individuals expecting an obamaphone check, forget it. The funding of dreams will go to the same old chameleon social organizations that change their names to suit the funding, call themselves nonprofits, pay salaries higher than an entry-level congresscritter to the elite few and accomplish absolutely nothing - as usual.

“No surprise here, Reparations have always been part of the Rats bucket list. IMO”

The rats don’t want to pay reparations. The rats want to give their black voters hope that they will receive a big payday. This keeps them in the democrat fold.

Today’s blacks should be grateful that slavery occurred. Otherwise they wouldn’t be alive today in this country. And if they were alive, they would be running for their lives from lions in Africa. Slavery 170 plus years ago is the best thing that could have ever happened for today’s blacks in this country.

Correct. Traditionally, the GOP tends to be ineffective in appealing to immigrant communities, but these days modern communications can break through media obfuscation.

I have had Hispanic immigrants who are rabidly pro-Trump confide in accented English their fear that he is "our country's" last chance to avoid sliding into socialism and permanent rule by Leftists. I even had a group of Guyanese immigrants at a social event passionately explain how important Trump's election and now reelection are. Educated, hard-working, and conservative, the Guyanese were especially pleased to find out that I too was a registered Republican.

The Guyanese -- dark-skinned and of East Indian extraction -- warned that Obama-style racial politics had incited political turmoil and destructive animosities in Guyana that pitted those of African ancestry against those of East Indian ancestry. That experience was enough to put them off against Obama and the Democrats.

Why should the US government (i.e., taxpayers) pay reparations?

I think that the Democrats are terrified by Trump’s appeal to Blacks because even relatively small shifts in political loyalty can unexpectedly deliver a state and its precious electoral votes. Trump has shown himself to be unusually adept in reaching beyond the traditional Republican base.

It has more to do with giving the blacks some pork. You know, something to distract them from the jobs they have.
