A US military drone has been shot down by an Iranian surface-to-air missile while in international airspace over the Strait of Hormuz, US officials say.
Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) said it shot down the drone over Iranian airspace, near Kuhmobarak in the southern province of Hormozgan.
IRGC commander Maj-Gen Hossein Salami said the incident sent "a clear message to America", state media said.
It comes at a time of escalating tension between the US and Iran.
On Monday, the US defence department said it was deploying 1,000 extra troops to the region in response to "hostile behaviour" by Iranian forces.
The US has accused Iran of attacking two oil tankers with mines last Thursday just outside the Strait of Hormuz, in the Gulf of Oman. Iran rejects the allegation.

It IS obvious that the propaganda media is beating the war drums, probably as yet-another in their endless efforts to hurt our President anyway they can. For me, that’s ENOUGH reason to ignore it. We’ll just have to life without one more spy drone. Boo freaking hoo.
Good analysis. However, the regime is more vulnerable to economic sanction as they are felt by ordinary Iranians who - at some point - will rise against the radical Islamic leadership.

You see, it is easy to sit at your breakfast table sipping your coffee and suggesting we respond to a spit ball with a 500 pound bomb.
Then what will Iran do? Will they fire hundred of missiles at Saudi Arabia? Will they fire missiles at Tel Aviv and Europe? Will they unleash missiles at NY from some frieghter in the Atlantic?
Then what will we do?
You see, when you go tit for tat you have to assess the probabilities associated with your “tat.”
The best thing to do is ignore them, like a whining little baby throwing a fit. Eventually, they are going to shoot at something big. And the rest of the world will join us in slapping them.

The downing of a U.S. drone by Iranian provocateurs should serve as a direct warning that Iran’s Ayatollah Ali Khamenei is willing to serve as a political proxy warrior on behalf of America’s Democrat Socialist party because both would benefit by luring the Trump administration into a sustained regional conflict, thereby provoking strong anti-war sentiments in the run-up to the 2020 elections.
Both know that President Trump would never win reelection if he took the bait because such a move would be highly unpopular in the U.S. Furthermore, Iran would benefit by helping Democrat Socialists regain the White House because they could then reinstate the terms of America’s unilateral surrender “negotiated” by Obama and Kerry under the terms of the much ballyhooed “Iranian Nuclear Deal.”
If you don’t believe that such a scenario is possible, then please explain why John F’n Kerry has been defiantly meeting with the Iranian Mullahs in open violation of the Hatch Act, ever since President Trump scrapped their phony “nuclear deal.” I’ll wait.
