A US military drone has been shot down by an Iranian surface-to-air missile while in international airspace over the Strait of Hormuz, US officials say.
Iran's Islamic Revolution Guards Corps (IRGC) said it shot down the drone over Iranian airspace, near Kuhmobarak in the southern province of Hormozgan.
IRGC commander Maj-Gen Hossein Salami said the incident sent "a clear message to America", state media said.
It comes at a time of escalating tension between the US and Iran.
On Monday, the US defence department said it was deploying 1,000 extra troops to the region in response to "hostile behaviour" by Iranian forces.
The US has accused Iran of attacking two oil tankers with mines last Thursday just outside the Strait of Hormuz, in the Gulf of Oman. Iran rejects the allegation.

Not that it matters, but I agree with you with one small caveat: I don’t think the shooting down of a US military air asset can go unanswered. A measure-for-measure pinpoint counterstrike is necessary to draw a line against further attacks. Just my $.01

AKA, a RQ-4N BAMS-D (Broad Area Maritime Surveillance-Demonstrator) aircraft which is the experimental precursor to the MQ-4C.
It was shot down by a Raad (Thunder) road-mobile, medium-range SAM system similar to a SA-11 Buk.
If we were to attack...take out their nuclear capabilities. Set them back two decades. I don’t believe for a second the Iranians do not have a secret nuclear program to fast track their ability to join the world’s nuclear club.
All they need is a few...as in 2 or 3 nuclear weapons to hold hostage other nations.

This is a very Putinist ploy by Death to America Iran. Iran is trying to drive a wedge between Europe and the US. They know the EU won’t support more sanctions or a Trump led US assault on Iran. So they will keep escalating. POTUS will eventually have to respond bigly or look weak. When that happens likely the EU will not support the US.
I agree with you. As much as I’d like to see Iran turned into a sea of glass, there may be additional dark forces behind the egging on of this “conflict” on the World stage, trying to goad President Trump and maybe even playing Iran into an irreversible blundering c f*ck. So far the President is playing a good game of chess with Iran. It reminds me of that comedic image of a tall guy holding the top of the head of a midget bully who is swinging and flailing wildly and getting nowhere. Let Iran lash and strike out into a spectacle of international scorn, even if we take a few hits, get the few honorable countries left on our side, then pummel.

The military assets need to be destroyed. Even though the sanctions are hitting their finances it doesn’t take any money to push a button on a weapon that’s already made and deployed. Iran has thousands of cruise missiles some of which have >1200 mi. range.
And they’ve threatened to restart uranium enrichment.
