House confronts the "inheritance of slavery" in panel on reparations

Sen. Cory Booker said in a panel that the U.S. needs to address "persistent inequalities" experienced by African Americans by discussing reparations, the idea that the descendants of slaves should be compensated for the injustices and cruelty their ancestors experienced.

Booker said that the nation has "yet to truly acknowledge and grapple with the racism and white supremacy that tainted this country's founding and continues to cause persistent and deep racial disparities and inequality. These disparities don't just harm black communities, they harm all communities."

A House Judiciary subcommittee debated H.R. 40, a bill that would study how the U.S. would implement reparations to black Americans, amid a national conversation about what the federal government owes descendants of slaves. Booker, writer Ta-Nehisi Coates and actor Danny Glover were among the witnesses who testified before the panel.

Yes, and the North sacrificed many thousands of soldiers to free the slaves.

well I have had enough! Too many Blacks continue to build their lives upon their unconcealed race hatred of white people with the likes of Sen Boker, Jackson and Sharpton continuing to shove it down their throats while illiterate single family mothers carry their water to their children from one generation to the other. recall that in 2007 Oprah Winfrey gave up on trying to help inner city black school kids on the south side of Chicago because, she said, they're just not interested in learning. She then opened a girls school in South Africa!.......and there was Zero retaliation against her for saying it.

“By 1776, Jefferson was one of the largest planters in Virginia. However, the value of his property (land and slaves) was increasingly offset by his growing debts, which made it very difficult to free the people he kept forced in to slavery, and thereby lose them as assets.

“In his writings on American grievances justifying the Revolution, he attacked the British for sponsoring human trafficking to the colonies.

“In 1778, with Jefferson’s leadership, slave importation was banned in Virginia, one of the first jurisdictions worldwide to do so.

“Jefferson was a lifelong advocate of ending the trade and as president led the effort to criminalize the international slave trade that passed Congress and he signed in 1807, shortly before Britain passed a similar law.

“In 1779, as a practical solution to end the legal enslavement of humans, Jefferson supported gradual emancipation, training, and colonization of African-American slaves rather than unconditional manumission, believing that releasing unprepared people with no place to go and no means to support themselves would only bring them misfortune.

“In 1784, Jefferson proposed federal legislation banning slavery in the New Territories of the North and South after 1800, which failed to pass Congress by one vote.

“In his Notes on the State of Virginia, published in 1785, Jefferson expressed the beliefs that slavery corrupted both masters and slaves alike, supported colonization of freed slaves, promoted the idea that African-Americans were inferior in intelligence, and that emancipating large numbers of slaves made slave uprisings more likely.

“tainted this country’s founding”

Georgia, South Carolina, Virginia and Maryland were independent states.

They didn’t have to join the newly created United States.

A slavery exception had to be carved out for them.

George III would have been happy to let plantation owners keep their slaves to gain a renewed foothold for Great Britain in the South.

There probably aren't enough mules in the US to give every black family a mule. And if they live in a city, where are they going to keep the mule? Maybe they can be given an alternative of a Cadillac if they don't want the mule. Of course Caddys aren't much good for pulling plows.

Maybe they should start with a study of whether black NBA and NFL players are being adequately compensated compared to their white, Hispanic, Asian-American or Native American teammates. It should be easy enough to juggle the figures to show they have been victims of discrimination.

I have seen documentation that at least one of my ancestors owned a few slaves in South Carolina. I have seen African-Americans bearing my unusual surname, which almost certainly points back to slaves adopting the surname of owners who were in my lineage.

I think there are several strong arguments against reparations. First, the South was financially devastated in the wake of the Civil War. The vast majority of that slave generated wealth evaporated. Then there was the carpetbagger scourge that decimated even further. My wing of the family moved to SW Georgia before the Civil War. To my knowledge, none of them had slaves . . . that was 5 generations back. Then came the Great Depression and my great-grandfather lost the family farm and pretty much everything. Can’t be much more equal than everybody having nothing.

About the only thing that I admit slanted in my favor during my life has been one of opportunity. I know some blacks did not get opportunities that I did because of prejudices. However, some things bounced against me as a head wind: Great Society programs have cost me dearly in taxes paid over my career . . . I have already paid much in reparations. And finally, a promotion at work was delayed for quite a while when a black person, because of hiring and promotion preferences, was promoted ahead of me. I did not complain because he was perfectly qualified and competent. There were about five us us who were pretty much equal in performance and competency vying for that position.

There is just no way to balance that scale. The discussion does more harm than good specifically because it inflames feelings of injustice when there is no fair way to judge the impact. It is simply a way for the “community organizer” rabble-rousers to heap more resentment into the minds of African-Americans to gain support for socialism and invalidating our Constitution. For that reason, the actual INTENT of most pushing for it is evil.

“This whole subject is bait.”

The Democrats in Congress have proposed a bill that would eventually make reparations the law of the land.

The Democrats in Congress are holding public hearings on reparations and Cory Booker said, “This is a very important hearing. It is historic. It is urgent.”

Other Democrats have said reparations are necessary.

Democratic presidential nominees support reparations and have promised that if Democrats win the election in 2020 that reparations will become the law of the land.

This is an important issue. The Democrats are already supporting it. Taxpayers may end up paying hundreds of billions of dollars to whoever the Democrats say deserves it.

Learned about that when I visited Monticello last month (lovely, gorgeous day and I saw James Monroe’s Highland later that afternoon). Jefferson saw to it that his slaves learned important trades so they could get jobs after they were freed in his will.

Nice post. I retired before having anything to do with AA other than the seminars that left us more cynical than when we went in. If I owned a company and couldn’t operate it on meritocracy, I’d sell it.

In 30 years, will a reparations bill be introduced on behalf of the people who were made slaves by this bill? I mean, forcing someone to work and give their product to another IS slavery.

Williams wrote: “So my relatives came here long after slavery ended, I’ve never discriminated against a black person. None of them were slaves but they can accuse me of being responsible somehow and owing them money.”

It has nothing to do with slavery and everything to do with unequal wealth distribution. The modern democrat party’s only objective is to make every thing equal. Therefore, you owe and reparations is an excuse to make you pay.

This is true of wealth, health care, the type of house you live in, the neighborhood, the schools, everything has to be made equal.

But probably most so called “blacks “ are actually bi-racial, like Obama. So how does this get sorted out?

"I believe that every descendant of slavery should be allowed to receive 40 acres from the Confederacy."

Although vote-desperate Democrats are undoubtedly willing to promise everything under the sun to win 2020 elections, not only have the states never amended the Constitution to give feds specific power to tax and spend for reparations, buy why should non-Confederacy states be expected to help compensate descendants of slavery descendants?

No coincidence that this surfaces on Juneteenth, (June 19th) the day slavery was officially ended in Texas and a semi holiday for some Black people.
