House confronts the "inheritance of slavery" in panel on reparations

Sen. Cory Booker said in a panel that the U.S. needs to address "persistent inequalities" experienced by African Americans by discussing reparations, the idea that the descendants of slaves should be compensated for the injustices and cruelty their ancestors experienced.

Booker said that the nation has "yet to truly acknowledge and grapple with the racism and white supremacy that tainted this country's founding and continues to cause persistent and deep racial disparities and inequality. These disparities don't just harm black communities, they harm all communities."

A House Judiciary subcommittee debated H.R. 40, a bill that would study how the U.S. would implement reparations to black Americans, amid a national conversation about what the federal government owes descendants of slaves. Booker, writer Ta-Nehisi Coates and actor Danny Glover were among the witnesses who testified before the panel.

H.R. 40, which was named for the post-Civil War promise of "40 acres and a mule" as compensation for former slaves, has languished in the House since former Rep. John Conyers first introduced it in 1989. But Rep. Sheila Jackson Lee reintroduced the bill in January. Reparations used to be a fringe idea — at least among white politicians — but it's been receiving more attention from mainstream Democrats in the 2020 presidential campaign. Many of the declared Democratic presidential candidates have staked a position on reparations, or at least support having a national conversation about the issue. Jackson Lee said in her opening remarks that H.R. 40 would be a "long overdue" response to slavery.

I believe that every descendant of slavery should be allowed to receive 40 acres from the Confederacy.

Will anyone care to address the BILLIONS already handed to American minorities, over the last several decades?

I mean-that figure ought to be deducted from ANY resolution on ‘reparations’...FOR SURE! I think if we are honest, considering the billions already spent, there need be NO reparations at all. Call us even!!

No. You don’t inherit slavery. No one inherits the victim status of slavery. No one inherits guilt over slaveholding. No one acquires guilt over slaveholding by reason of having a skin color similar to that of former slaveholders.

As for reparations, shove it! I’ve already paid big time. I was refused a job that I wanted with a major corporation back in the 70’s with these exact words: “We’re not hiring now, but when we start hiring we’ll be hiring Blacks.” Exact quote.

Don’t tell me I have to pay.

Replace “the nation” with “the democratic party” and I think he’s on to something.

The rest of us gave up hundreds of thousands of lives to free them. It would be like The US paying reparations to Jews for the Nazi internment camps.

Reparations for slavery has been talked about among the lunatic fringe for years. Now it’s getting more serious discussion.

How the heck you administer such a program of paying reparations is beyond my pay grade, even if you accept the premise that somehow we owe reparations in the first place.

The irony of seeing multi-millionaire famous actor Danny Glover urging us to pay reparations, is surely lost on the radical types who push this sort of thing.

Should Danny Glover get reparations, when he has achieved the American dream in so many ways? Just one of many questions to ask, regarding who should get reparations.

And what of poor black people? We have instituted laws and policies such as affirmative action, to assist those who had been historically discriminated against. Is that not sufficient to help make up for the sins of the past?

What of poor whites, such as we see in Appalachia, who have been exploited in various ways? How do we compensate for their problems? Should we, or is that too far a reach, to look at reparations for poor whites, Mexican Americans, homosexuals, and other grievance groups?

So my relatives came here long after slavery ended, I’ve never discriminated against a black person.

None of them were slaves but they can accuse me of being responsible somehow and owing them money.

BUT I can’t say anything if they commit more crimes, don’t study in school, and are on drugs and welfare?

That’s about how this so called “conversation” works, isn’t it?

I prefer to say I don’t owe you a GD thing and get the hell out of my face, take care of your family like I take care of mine and leave me the hell alone.

“The worst enemy that the Negro have is this white man that runs around here drooling at the mouth professing to love Negros and calling himself a liberal, and it is following these white liberals that has perpetuated problems that Negros have. If the Negro wasn’t taken, tricked or deceived by the white liberal, then Negros would get together and solve our own problems. I only cite these things to show you that in America, the history of the white liberal has been nothing but a series of trickery designed to make Negros think that the white liberal was going to solve our problems. Our problems will never be solved by the white man.”

...For almost 150 years the United States has been conducting an experiment. The subjects of the experiment: black people and working-class whites. The hypothesis to be tested: Can a people taken from the jungles of Africa and forced into slavery be fully integrated as citizens in a majority white population?
...The experiment has failed. Not because of culture, or white privilege, or racism. The fundamental problem is that white people and black people are different. They differ intellectually and temperamentally. These differences result in permanent social incompatibility.
...Our rulers don’t seem to understand just how tired their white subjects are with this experiment. They don’t understand that white people aren’t out to get black people; they are just exhausted with them. They are exhausted by the social pathologies, the violence, the endless complaints, the blind racial solidarity, the bottomless pit of grievances, the excuses, the reflexive animosity. The elites explain everything with “racism,”

Welfare and the tentacle programs of the Great Society WERE reparations. Now we just pay blacks to keep from rioting.

It only makes sense with leftists and racists that the further you get from Slavery the MORE they blame everything on it and want someone to pay.

They are kooks, criminals and racists.

I’ll gladly agree to pay any slaves from that era, reparations. Heck even their children. That is all.
