Steps away from the U.S. Capitol – a building built by slaves – the House Judiciary subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties is holding its first hearing in more than a decade on the hot-button topic of reparations for the descendants of Africans brought to America, enslaved and impacted by discriminatory policies including segregation.
The hearing, timed to coincide with "Juneteenth," a date when the last slaves in Texas learned they were free, brings to the forefront the centuries-old debate over what, if anything, is owed.
At the end of the Civil War formerly enslaved families were promised by Union leadership 40 acres and a mule -- an offer never fulfilled. Centuries later, the debate over reparations is playing out on the campaign trail as many 2020 presidential presidential candidates weigh in on the topic and lawmakers press the case with perennial legislative efforts.
The appearance actor Danny Glover and award-winning author Ta-Nehisi Coates, whose 2014 essay "The Case for Reparations" thrust the divisive topic onto the national stage, are expected to testify, lending celebrity status to an issue that has been wending through Congress for decades.
Glover grew emotional as he spoke about his family's history as sharecroppers and as the descendants of slaves and stressed that America needs to acknowledge the impact of slavery and discrimination.

I’m fine with reparations, IF and ONLY IF those who want to receive them will sign off on a document permanently giving up their US citizenship and then depart the country never to return.

America inherited the institution of slavery from England, a leftover from Colonial times. Although our founding documents declared all men to be equal, the problem of slavery was deferred; it might have been impossible to unite the states in revolt against England if the immediate ban of slavery was insisted on.
They were no slaves in the Asian countries?
The entire world thought slavery was a good idea since it had been practiced world wide for thousands of years. The Hebrews in Egypt were not the first slaves or the beginning of slavery

If this were to even be considered, it would have to come with conditions:
1) There can be no further preferential treatment for any race. Period. No Affirmative Action, no preferred enrollment in colleges and universities, no preferences in hiring, all of it must stop immediately.
2) Whites may never be accused of racism again and all pejorative references to whites (honkey, cracker, whitey, etc.) must be treated with the same disdain as similar words for blacks are now. In addition, all movies, television shows, and music that contain derogatory references to whites must be erased from history and all of the actors and musicians may never be able to work again. Anyone who refers to a white in this manner in the future will be prosecuted for a “hate crime”
3) Any person who receives reparations, regardless of where they were born, must immediately lose their US citizenship and be removed to an African country of their choice. They may apply, like any other citizen of a foreign country, for a visa and reenter the US on a merit basis if they choose, but again, no preferential treatment will be given for those who take this deal.
