40 Acres and a Mule: Ta-Nehisi Coates and Danny Glover join renewed debate over reparations
ABC News ^ | 06/19/2019 | By BEATRICE PETERSON and MATTHEW VANN

Steps away from the U.S. Capitol – a building built by slaves – the House Judiciary subcommittee on the Constitution, Civil Rights and Civil Liberties is holding its first hearing in more than a decade on the hot-button topic of reparations for the descendants of Africans brought to America, enslaved and impacted by discriminatory policies including segregation.

The hearing, timed to coincide with "Juneteenth," a date when the last slaves in Texas learned they were free, brings to the forefront the centuries-old debate over what, if anything, is owed.

At the end of the Civil War formerly enslaved families were promised by Union leadership 40 acres and a mule -- an offer never fulfilled. Centuries later, the debate over reparations is playing out on the campaign trail as many 2020 presidential presidential candidates weigh in on the topic and lawmakers press the case with perennial legislative efforts.

The appearance actor Danny Glover and award-winning author Ta-Nehisi Coates, whose 2014 essay "The Case for Reparations" thrust the divisive topic onto the national stage, are expected to testify, lending celebrity status to an issue that has been wending through Congress for decades.

Glover grew emotional as he spoke about his family's history as sharecroppers and as the descendants of slaves and stressed that America needs to acknowledge the impact of slavery and discrimination.

Should have picked our own damned cotton.

I’d like to find the person who thought that slavery would be a good idea and kick ‘em in the balls.

It’s about time white people were paid for freeing slaves.

How about reparations being paid by those who fought to keep slaves enslaved?

The Democrats. Tax all Democratic voters. It’s the equitable thing to do.

Any reparations to be discussed are to be collected in Liberia, and are final.

[[and stressed that America needs to acknowledge the impact of slavery and discrimination.]]

Wha Wha What? Why is the very first time I’m ever hearing about this slavery business? You mean there were slaves? Why didn’t anyone ever tell me? My goodness- thank you Danny Glover for bringing this to my attention- I had no idea that black folks went through hell for many years- Had it not been for your comments on this- I would have never known- thank you!

I mean, it’s not like we’ve been constantly reminded of it for decades now or anything- Thanks for making us understand

Pssst- Danny- EVERY American practically, knows slavery happened and how bad it was- You’re not divulging anything we don’t know— only those living under a rock do not-

Most Americans acknowledge what happened- We hate it- You don’t need to pretend like we don’t anymore- Enough already- Many of our distant relatives were treated brutally too- and even indentured, or thrown in prisons as innocent people- or forced against their will to work for ‘the man’ too- We go on with our lives- Most of America is not racist anymore- period-

Stop trying to lay the guilt trip on those of us who had nothing to do with the issue- and stop pretending you are owed money for it- We didn’t get money for our ancestor’s horrible lives- now are we asking for reparations because we are NOT owed any!

So, who is it that will make the call as to who gets it and who pays for it? I had kin folks that paid for it in blood back in the 1860’s fighting out of New York against the south. How many folks would not be here today had their ancestors not been brought here due to wars, famine and disease?

Today in Georgia 40 acres would be $400,000 plus whatever 2 mules are worth. Although we are likely facing a Kiboto tractor instead. Pretty good scam.

Glover’s brain needs reparations.

I am amazed that anyone can be as stupid as he is.

In one of his Lethal Weapon movies, he had a scene where he played some bozo who wanted to emigrate TO South Africa. It must have been a challenge for him to act as someone so much more intelligent than he actually is.

[[I view this slavery thing as cancer of this nation.]]

was it a cancer on Africa where they held slaves too? On Europe? On practically the entire world? Or is it just America who are the bad guys?

Asians held black slaves too, and even enslaved their own people-

The first legal slave owner in American history was a black tobacco farmer named Anthony Johnson.

In South Carolina alone, there were nearly 200 black slave owners-

American Indians owned black slaves- by the 1000’s

There were nearly 4000 black people who owned slaves in America during that period-

Most of the slaves brought to America were purchased from African black slave owners

The Chinese in California were treated far worse than the slaves after the Civil War. Where are their grievances?

It is unfortunate. Makes it very easy to see how quickly a populace can turn from Christ.

Asian conservatives are awesome.

Actually, US Grant in his civil war memoirs, stated that they could be sent to the island of Hispaniola which would hold many thousands of them.

So they thought about deporting them back then.

Who benefited more from black chattel slavery in the “now” US? The long dead whites and their posterity? Or, the long dead blacks and their posterity who were given the benefit of living in the greatest, most prosperous and freest nation state in the history of the world?

In Georgia, at the college level, African American history was required.Taking a night class on history we learned that 95% of slaves went to central and south america from Africa, in Brazil 80% died working in the mines and clearing swamps. The African American teacher of the class made it clear that slavery didn’t start in America, and that the lucky ones were sent to America. He had more arguments in class with young African American men who believed that american started slavery, and that we sent troops to Africa to collect slaves. It was somewhat amusing to watch.

Americans did no such dragging, you are ill informed.

My great grand father joined and fought with the 24th Wisconsin Infantry. My family reparations have been made.
