Women have outperformed their male counterparts in entrance examinations for a medical school in Japan that last year admitted rigging admission procedures to give men an unfair advantage.
Juntendo University in Tokyo said that of the 1,679 women who took its medical school entrance exam earlier this year, 139, or 8.28%, had passed. The pass rate among 2,202 male candidates was 7.72%.
It was the first time in seven years that the pass rate among women was higher than among men, the Asahi Shimbun reported.
The university attributed the exam results to its decision to abolish the unfair treatment of female applicants after last years revelations...

What does bring a smile is how polite the Japanese are about the productivity differences between male and female doctors - rather than acknowledge out loud the truth, they fudged the numbers. I don’t doubt that there are females every bit as “smart” on tests as males who want to be doctors. That is not the issue.
It is mathematically provable that productivity varies significantly based on gender. Hence, you will never have sufficient doctors if you do not recognize that reality. In America this is true as well, also factoring in that many doctors of both genders want to work 8-5, 4.5-day work weeks. I don’t begrudge the female doctors who take time off for having babies. It just needs to be figured into training a lot more doctors and nurse practitioners to compensate.
FYI-It is also notable that where doctors went on strike, the death rates in those communities declined noticeably.
Medical school in the US requires only calculus I. However at least organic chemistry and basic physics is also required.
Organic chemistry seems like a course that would weed out the pretenders.
the pretenders get weeded out by the MCAT and the gpa requirements . The competition to get into medical school is brutal. it was not easy for my daughter who was summa cum laude from a well known university with great mcat scores who is also a beautiful classically trained ballerina with a dance minor.
Yes I tutor physics, basic is mostly mechanics which uses math but not truly deadly serious. Ive always heard organic chem is pretty hard, but I dont know what it actually entails.
Poster was trying to disparage women with the math comment, but I had to redirect it by pointing out it might not be that intense mathematically anyway, so, gee, I guess women can handle it....
Uh, I think you are misreading. The MALES were fudged to make them BETTER.
Just how much math is required for a biology-based career?
One of my wife’s friends is a Radiologist with a deep math background. Maybe she is just a math head that happens to be a Physician?
If it does not use film, it is lots of numbers?
Let me try to clarify. Japanese fudging in the past was to reduce the number of qualifying females in the testing, right? Now that has been “fixed” and females did slightly better than the males in this most recent batch of testing. Right?
Just saying that the past fudging was defacto adjustment for the reality of lower female productivity, and no one wants to trigger the Krackens telling the truth.
some of us! i will admit my strength is not math but my daughters is
That is true, that is what that one paragraph stated - at least a handicap for females because they might get pregnant. (Did not state that it was scientific adjustment, however.)
Women tend to do better than males in a school setting. It was that way when I went to school back in the 1970s. The girls in my class were on the whole better behaved, more diligent with completing their homework, and more serious about their academic performance in general.
Of course you had your exceptions. There were some girl troublemakers and there were some boys who stayed out of trouble and studied hard and diligently.
So on the whole, I'm not surprised at all to see that girls tend to outperform the boys academically.
Have you noticed that AI does a better job of detecting cancers from x-rays than doctors do?
But the men used to have better “Street Smarts” than the women.
Today? Who knows.
This kind of rigging is not OK, but rigging of exam scores by race in US colleges is OK.
AI does a better job of detecting cancers from x-rays than doctors do?
No surprise.
Also, no phones to answer, no worries...
Just a nice clean supply of power, a clean and cool operating environment...
No AMA dues...
Did the Marines issue the fat chick an Army t-shirt?
I don't know the data on brain size other than the bigger your body is, your brain may be bigger. Not sure that has anything to do with cognition.
You are wrong about women scoring 5% lower on cognitive tests. Some subtests are somewhat lower for women. Some subtests are lower for men.
However, the means and the medians for cognitive tests are about the same for males and females. The shape of the distribution may vary for males and females. Women score higher than men on some tests. Men score higher than women.
BTW the man who *claims* to have invented Scrabble had a hard time beating his wife. She beat him most of the time. (She probably invented the game.)
You be bad!
Okay, the spread is different for males and female math test scores. More guys score high on math tests.
That difference is getting narrower as more women are taking (or allowed to take) math courses.
I loved it that the norms differed. Since so few women scored high on the math aptitude tests, those who did had a higher percentile rank! ;-)
Do the math on the below chart. Generally women score about 5% less than men on cognitive tests. Women and men are genetically different. They are biologically optimized for different but equally important roles. Because there is such a wide variation at the individual level everyone should be given an equal opportunity, but an equal outcome at the group level isn't likely unless the test is rigged.
