Germany, France and Spain on Monday signed a deal for a next-generation European fighter plane. The framework was agreed between the defense ministers of each nation with French President Emmanuel Macron in attendance at the Paris Air Show in Le Bourget, just north of the French capital.

The arrangement will include a joint air combat system that could also control drones and satellites.

German Defense Minister Ursula von der Leyen said it was a "big day for the European defense union."

The Future Combat Air System (FCAS) is expected to be operational in just over 20 years, von der Leyen confirmed: "The system will be ready by 2040, and by then we need to have found a common European solution."

By 2040 when they get it operational, our aircraft will resemble UFOs and they will be flying biplanes in comparison.

They are very late to the party, but that’s normal for Europe.

This seems to be mostly a jobs program meant to produce an F-35 knockoff.

Yup. Poland, Hungary and Czech Republic are our only strong European allies. They believe in borders and national sovereignty. Screw Germany and France.

Just like the Eurofighter it will be another white elephant incapable of attaining air superiority against any serious competitor.

The Euros are more interested in maintaining an air of superiority.

“Just like the Eurofighter it will be another white elephant incapable of attaining air superiority against any serious competitor.”

I believe it is a jobs program. However, I also believe they are trying to do what the US already does; have a fully integrated system where everything can talk to everything. The fact it will take 20 years to accomplish floors me.
