Attorney David Winslow said his client a Los Angeles Police Department officer whom he wouldn't name was struck from behind without a word being spoken Friday night as he fed his son samples of teriyaki chicken in the warehouse store in Corona, southeast of Los Angeles.
Winslow told The Associated Press the officer was briefly knocked unconscious and his 1 ½-year-old son also fell to the ground.
When the officer regained consciousness, Winslow said, "he believed his life and his son's life was in immediate danger."
"He believed he was under attack," Winslow said. "That's when the shooting started."

Reports today had the family calling the decedent a “Gentle giant” and the report went on to say his mental issues were deteriorating recently.
Dam ol teriyaki chicken.
WalMart has extensive video surveillance all over the store.
It should be pretty easy to tell who is telling the truth.
It was Costco, but like that other Costco, the video may go missing if inconvenient.
Costco
Dude waiting in line felt “triggered”—and then he REALLY got triggered.
End of story.
I go to my local Costco at least once a month, mostly because the have excellent USDA Prime Beef and usually have fresh halibut. Have not tried the teriyaki chicken. My local Costco has cameras everywhere. I doubt there is anywhere in the store that is not covered by at least 3 cameras. It's quite possible the lawyer has seen the video, and thus the "severe blow to the head" and "He believed he was under attack" statements.
Two world’s are intersecting here and it it’s entirely predictable. The carry world has to live at a heightened state of alert because they have to make life or death decisions instantaneously. The mental health world wants everyone to have a fair shake in life, even the people who would normally be in a controlled environment or heavily medicated.
Every bad guy with a gun has something wrong with him mentally. It’s impossible to dispute because it is impossible to say that unprovoked murder is a sane act. So, every person who carries has to take any clearly mentally unstable person as a threat.
Enter the nonverbal “gentle giant” with a big shove to your toddler. Maybe if you aren’t carrying you get a chance to clear up the misunderstanding peacefully... but also maybe that giant person is aiming to kill your toddler and without a gun you are powerless to stop him. I don’t know all the details of this particular case, but generally, the phrase “he was a gentle giant” isn’t applied to harmless people doing harmless things. It’s usually applied to mentally limited people who do dangerous things, albeit on a rare basis, bit really can’t be trusted to live alone full time.

that’s it! I’m never using Costco bathrooms again!
Thanks to all for the correction.
The thought seems to apply, though. I bet there is video coverage.
How did he shoot a bunch of other people at such close range?
I get a little triggered by the stupid food carts blocking the aisles. Only once was I rude.
I was patiently waiting for an old guy to move out of the way in his motorized scooter. He apologized to me for being in the way. “Oh no - your fine, take your time. It’s the lady with the samples that should be apologizing.” (Yeah - she’s just doing her job, but...”
The lady gave me this REALLY mean look.
I NEVER am even tempted at a sample. Primarily because then I couldn’t be justified in being annoyed at them! Also our Costco looks like a third world country and kids are coughing all over them, people eating as they are picking stuff off the shelves, licking their fingers, smacking their lips, crumbs down their chins .... Disgusting.
If the mentally disabled guy is attacking, or just standing over him after he clobbered him, his parents may have been trying to grab him to stop the situation as well.
Or, they may have stepped in once the shooting started to try to rescue their son. Or perhaps they tried to attack the cop in order to stop him from shooting their son?
It is a sympathetic story, the only reservation is how often I’ve heard police or their lawyers lie about an incident. Need to see the video.
Costco seems a magnet for questionable police shootings. That one in, I think, New Mexico should have got two officers put away for life.
Agreed. Look at the mall incident where the child was thrown over the railing. You can’t read someone’s intentions. Ever.

The article mentions that there is security camera footage and implies that investigators have seen it.
Several employees testified that Scott seemed confused, had trouble walking straight, stumbled repeatedly and had to rely on his girlfriend, Samantha Sterner, for support while he was in the store.
Scotts post-mortem blood test showed high levels of the painkiller morphine and the anti-anxiety drug Xanax.
Eyewitness accounts of the incident vary on some points, but a majority of witnesses said they either saw Scott pull a gun or thought he was about to do so when his hand went to his hip. Most also said they heard one officer shouting at Scott to get on the ground.

I think you are correct - one cop was shouting for him to get on the ground. IIRC, another one was telling him to get his hands in the air, and the third was telling him something else.
It’s been awhile, but I also seem to recall that his gun was inside a zippered pouch. (Maybe that was the “something else” - “Drop the gun!” But first he had to get to it.)
