Never saw the Sand Pebbles. In ‘65 preparing for HS graduation. Many long term movies missed during that time. ‘Sandpiper’, Ice Station Zebra’, to name a few. McQueen was always an actor to be admired. Remember him in “The Thomas Crown Affair’ and ‘Bullet’, two movies fortunate to catch.
Bergen - not a fan but do remember her in the movie ‘The Group’ (haven’t a clue in memory of actually seeing this one). Not a fan of most ‘war movies’ but do bend the rule a bit for a few.
I would say that except for the concluding scenes of Sand Pebbles, it’s not a war movie.
I’m an ex-Navy guy so I’m a sucker for a history piece with a Navy theme.
Most of the film is about the clash of cultures — China and America. Not many scenes with Bergen. It’s really about Steve McQueen and what it means to be a man.
In that respect, it’s a kind of Clint Eastwood movie.
