Sorry, but no, China is a real and present threat... and its not simply economically. I have believed for a long long time we will be in a hot war with China in my lifetime... I have been called a fool and laughed at, because I have stated this position since the early 90s....
I may not have to fight it, but my kids or grandkids will...
Trump is the first president to understand that China is a real and present threat.... Long, LONG OVERDUE.
They should have NEVER been given admission to the WTO, or open access to our markets.... They are a bad actor, and until they reform they absolutely should be tariffed, and every pressure made to encourage investment elsewhere.
Unions pushing for higher wages for some and backing the people that brought in cheap labor from south of the border is another. I don't think an illegal is quite as concerned with tools he can pass down to his children as American consumers once were.
Wal-mart's success when they were less China-centered was certainly a factor. Get people in the door and mom-and-pops start to feel the pinch. Years ago, I was in the market for a knife. specifically a Buck 110. I priced it at a hardware store that's been in town for decades:$65. Bi-Mart wanted $45. Next time I was in WalMart, I looked, and it was $30. Some years later, Buck was looking to relocate because I forget which State was killing them with regulations. They looked at Oregon, briefly. Ha! Public employee pensions deep in red ink, and States desperate to find money, environmental regulations designed to squeeze legitimate businesses out.... why the hell doesn't manufacturing flee the country?
Im not a shopaholic, but I must say, I havent noticed any.
The only real impact will be on clothing, and even then, the import duties wont affect the price that much compared to the markup that the retailers already collect.
So true. Live in Fla. We have a department store called Bealls. You can get stuff up to 70% off if you wait for it to hit clearance...
This includes name brands....
Also they are always running a 10% off seniors day, a spend so much get so many dollars back. There has to be a built in markup from the get go to then start discounting it like this....
To me wait and get what you really need, not what you think you must have....
You will save money that way....
No...everything in Walmart is NOT made in China. I didn’t read any further...and no I don’t want to end trade war with China
Here in NH we have a grocery chain out of Mass called Market Basket. They are actually cheaper than Walmart. They too have certain products that come from China, such as garlic. However, I am also suspicious of frozen shrimp that says Product of Vietnam. I have heard that some of this is actually comes from China and is repackaged in Vietnam because they know people do not want to buy Chinese products. All the fresh seafood states product of USA, Norway(salmon) or Canada.
My wife shops at Shaws (a more expensive grocery chain) that has USA gulf coast frozen shrimp.
It is really bad at Home Depot and Lowes too. Almost all power tools are now made in China. I know, I have looked. Same with faucets except Delta.
I went into Home Depot and bought a voltage meter Friday because I was having a problem with my John Deere lawn tractor. All the voltage meters they had were made in China.
I bought a voltage regulator replacement part at my local JD dealer. The part was made in China. I also bought Stihl trimmer string. Made in China. I also bought one quart 50/1 mixed non ethanol fuel. Made in the USA.
Thanks for the update on Vietnamese shrimp - in poorer days, we sometimes bought it for our Friday night pasta.
Luckily, I’m surrounded by one very good gourmet market and several farmer’s markets where I can get decent garlic. But I’ll be aware in future when I can’t get any good local garlic. I try never to touch Chinese imported food.
They even ran off the Salvation Army? Now they really sunk to an all new low!
Lulz. Isn’t like 80%+/- of what Walmart sells ‘made in China’? /s
I agree with you.
I have not trusted China for the thirty years they have been rolling all over our manufacturing base.
I lived in Beijing, back before Tiananmen Square. Even then, there was a lockstep aspect to the country, which made me uncomfortable.
Our businesses are creating (have created already) a HUGE problem for America.
Huge.
