Target, Walmart among 600 companies asking President Trump to end trade war with China

Walmart and Target are the problem.

EVERYTHING sold in Walmart (except most groceries) is from China.

Don't know about Target, but I presume they are exactly the same.

I know, not (everything). But close enough.

Entire ecosystems of manufacturing have vanished from America. It’s legions of material, parts and sub-system businesses, and their steady paying jobs that have disappeared.

Entire small and mid-sized towns in the USA have been decimated while we watch the Chinese build ghost cities.

I seriously wonder what (or even if) the business community is thinking with their incredibly myopic view on China.

Exactly my thoughts. Sam was “only made in America”...also. If there was a line at the cash register, employees were immediately pulled off other chores to open registers and get rid of wait lines. He said the most important function in the store was the cash register...if it is slowed down, the store is slowed down. He would hate what his legacy has become.

600 Companies like Walmart want to end the Trade War.

... in other words ...

Fakenews. 600 Companies want to continue the trade war.

10,000 small retailers want the 30 year Trade War ended.

Mexico was on the list, not sure what their status is. I think they’re off double-secret probation.

I worked at the corporate HQ of Wally for 5 years back in the early 2000s. Even then I asked “what happens if even one missile flies over the Taiwan strait?” The obvious answer was that store shelves would soon be empty.....the obvious conclusion was that Wally’s supply chain was way too dependent on China. For those wanting to hate on Wal-Mart, Target and the dollar stores sourced an even higher percentage of their goods from China.

If the big discount retailers have not used the last two years of warnings from President Trump to greatly diversify their sourcing, they will have only themselves to blame as tariffs get ratcheted up ever higher and get slapped on ever more goods. We absolutely can not afford to back down. We must force the Chicoms to end their mercantilist trade policies and industrial scale theft of intellectual property conducted by the PLA.

“Total BS to say everything at Walmart is from China.”

Um, then why is Walmart demanding the trade war with China be ended?

I think you’re fos.

I paid more for a dryer made in America and I think that was a wise choice

Clothes and groceries seem to be sourced elsewhere. Clothes from many places. Groceries, primarily from America. But everything else in the entire place. Aisle, after aisle, after aisle, is all made in China.

Some of the canned foods are produced in China...Foods that we always assumed were American made...It's on the labels...

A few notes:

- most textiles are not from China. Bangladesh and India are much bigger textile producers and growing while China’s share of the textile market is shrinking.

- it is not just that the retailers are buying directly from China. It is also that a lot of the large consumer products companies they deal with on a massive scale (think P&G, think Unilever, etc) have also outsourced a lot of production to China.

- making large adjustments to global sourcing is like turning around an oil tanker. It takes time if you are not to have massive disruption and to not have customers feel the pain in terms of much higher prices and shortages. Trump could not simply snap his fingers on day one and impose a massive honking tariff on everything from China without hurting Americans a lot too. He has been warning and threatening for 2 years. He is gradually applying more tariffs and to more goods - giving retailers time to adjust. That is the only practical way this could be done. Be patient, we’re finally moving in the right direction.

Well managed companies would of had contingency plans and a timeline well established.

Walmart some years ago actually forced some manufacturers to switch their manufacturing to Asia, telling them if they didn’t move their manufacturing to Asia they’d lose Walmart as a customer and Walmart would look elsewhere for similar products.

I been trying to recall anything I purchased there from China, but draw a blank.

Many food products are raised in America, then processed in China.
