After the response of at the Dept of Agriculture to Sonny moving some out to Kansas, I am thinking maybe Wichita would be fitting as our new capitol, should they somehow insist on making DC a state.

They want representation?
Return all the inhabited part of DC back to Maryland.
Keep the Federal mall area as DC.
Problem solved.
No need for a new “State”.

I wonder how many electoral votes that would get them.

"a majority of the Democrats running for president say they support making DC a state."

If demRATs want it than it is strictly for their benefit.

Hi.

“Some have suggested the only way DC can become a state is through Constitutional amendment.”

Not a suggestion, but fact.

I say give the entire district to Maryland and be done with it.

Maybe Perdue over at Ag had a good thought. Repostion the whole place, as you say, in some territory. I think you found the correct one. In fact, this description makes it the perfect place:

For nearly 70 years, the atoll was under the control of the U.S. military. During that time, it was variously used as a naval refueling depot, an airbase, a nuclear and biological weapons testing site, a secret missile base, and a chemical weapon and Agent Orange storage and disposal site.

In fact, send the entire Dem party there.

Maybe there’s something in the Constitution specifically about DC

Sigh.

Let the British burn it again.

Boy you really made me laugh out loud and not that fake lol crap.

I would like to amend your suggestion a bit: I think there is lots of great architecture and history there, so I propose using one of those bombs that wipe out only living creatures yet preserve the rest.

The Constitution prohibits in making a state of D C. by charting it as a Federal city without representation in Congress.

The democrats think they can remove the electoral college by ignoring the Constitution.

Yep, get rid of the electoral college and give a few thousand people two senators in Congress.

The Democrats disagree with the Constitution. With a loaf of bread under each arm.

If you go back to the original ‘DC’, it included Arlington and Alexandria. In the period leading up to the Civil War, this part was carved off because locals still brought Africans in and conducted sales on the docks. Because DC had no real mayor or city council with authority, the practical answer was to release the two areas back to Virginia.

With your suggestion, the Anacostia area (south of the Anacostia River and the SE of the District) could easily revert back to Maryland. Of the remainder (mostly the NW, center of DC, and NE)...I would guess and say that 75-percent could be returned as a county to Maryland.

Two questions would arise....would Maryland accept the two areas (two new counties), and my guess is that politically....it’s a rock-solid ‘NO’. They think the two areas could constitute a state, and that’s the only option.

The second question is locally, with residents in DC...would they sign up to be part of Maryland? In local vote, the residents would probably say ‘no’...thinking they could get state status.

For reference, the area of the district that is government-business for the most part....is a 2 mile by 2 mile area. The rest of DC is residence, business, or secondary government related.

I would also offer this opinion (having lived there in Arlington for 3.5 years)...the DC city management and city council is highly fractured, corrupted, and it would be in everyone’s interest to let Maryland take over the management to this. For those suggesting Maryland is highly corrupted...oh, yes, I agree. But DC’s corruption level is probably three or four times the amount that Maryland generates. The idea that the District could neutral and dedicated to just federal business, was a nice idea but that probably disappeared by the 1840s to 1860s.

Return the residential areas to Maryland. Draw lines around all of the federal buildings: White House, Capitol, Supreme Court, etc. That will be D.C. The residents could then vote as Marylanders, and we would be rid of the D.C. delegate and the electoral votes.

What’s wrong with DC being absorbed into VA or MD?

The original boundaries of DC included land given by Virginia. That part of the District of Columbia was given back to Virginia, in 1846 as I recall.

So they could simply give the part given by Maryland, back to Maryland. Then they would have full congressional representation. Problem solved.

But the liberals want to ensure that there are two additional Democrat senators from D.C.

Sure, they can have DC if we get:

1. 2 new states out of California
2. Michigan UP a state
3. Northern third of Wisconsin a state
4. Down state Illinois a state
5...and others

That’s what I think. Most of the swamp already lives in VA or MD; let those states absorb the rest of the residents.
