Tankers Off Iran Hit by Suspected Torpedoes

DUBAI—Two tankers were damaged in attacks off the coast of Iran early Thursday, including one operated by a Japanese company, on a day when Tehran rebuffed attempts by Japanese Prime Minister Shinzo Abe to ease a military standoff with the U.S.

The incidents sent oil prices sharply higher, reigniting fears of trade disruptions in the Strait of Hormuz, through which over a third of the world’s seaborne crude oil is shipped. Brent crude, the international benchmark for crude prices, rose 4% on Thursday to $62.37.

The attacks appeared to use relatively sophisticated weapons, according to early assessments, and came within roughly 45 minutes of each other in the Gulf of Oman, where four tankers were attacked last month in an incident the U.S. blamed on Iran, which Tehran denied. The U.S. military has built up its military presence in the Persian Gulf in response to what American officials said were threats from Iran, sending an aircraft carrier, the USS Abraham Lincoln, and its strike group to the region.

I was mobilized in 1992 for Operation Desert Shield/Desert Storm!

We’re STILL in the Sand Box TWENTY-SEVEN-FREAKIN’ YEARS LATER!

It makes me crazy beyond belief!

Which is, in part, exactly why the US will never make the Saudis "pay the AMERICAN PEOPLE" like you said we would.

Thanks for admitting you were wrong.

What was the location of all rogue CIA officers at the time the torpedoes were fired?

Well, partially wrong... I don’t think for a second that Trump’s the pushover fool/corrupt/idiot that former Presidents have been who fell under the spell of the deep state...

When the Iranians last got frisky and put mines in the Persian Gulf the US Naval escort commander put the tankers single file and let the lead tanker “soak up” all the mine hits. He realized that an oil tanker is a very difficult thing to sink and he wasn’t going to risk US cruisers, destroyers & frigates when the probably couldn’t survive a single mine explosion. This was all after Ronald Reagan undertook to “re-Flag” all the tankers that wanted US naval protection.

I pray we still have naval escort commanders like the one you've written about... Thanks for sharing - interesting stuff - - never heard that story.

*** Quite possibly it’s the regime in Iran that would find a war with the USA to be a useful distraction for their masses who are ready to revolt against the repressive Islamofascist Republic. ***

Yeah, because masses of Iranians want to become Yemen, Libya, or Syria. Here’s a nickel. Go buy a clue.

Iran should have been dealt with severely during the Reagan era but in those days America was depended on Mideast oil like drugs to a junkie. I would like to know what is the American interest in the Mideast now besides being the Mideast policeman.

“Only looooong and drawn out occupations make money.

Some, including too many here, never EVER EVER EVER learn!!”

You are REALLY going to have your hands full over the next 20 years spinning global conflits as America’s fault.

If it was up to me I’d revoke your citizenship and send you one-way to the innocent-victim-nation of your choice -today. Iran, Syria, Iraq, Venezuela, Cuba, Russia, North Korea. Pick your enlightened despotic savior society and leave us, plz.

OK I’ll bite. What is your basis for believing that their need for a distraction is so imminent and desperate that they would attack a Japanese tanker with PM Abe in town?

> as America’s fault.

They’re not “America’s” fault.

They’re the fault of people like the Bushes and the Clintons.

They were having problems two years ago when things were BETTER than they are now.

And just like Clinton used the war against imaginary genocide in Kosovo to distract people from his problems the Iranian regime can also distract their people with a war against ‘The Great Satan’.

A war would give the regime justification to crack down on dissidents and to execute people en masse in the name of national security.

Give me some hard data. Right now you appear to be willing to let possible millions die in a war for something you appear to be pretty vague and nonspecific about. I’m sure such a monstrous position is not your intent.

What has happened recently to make now - again, while PM Abe of Japan is in town talking to Iranian leaders - the right time?

55 Tonkin Gulf. Remember? That started the war that Bolton declined to fight in

He has that in common with Donald Trump and Bill Clinton.

And, arguably, George W. Bush (TX ANG).

That's a more difficult argument to make. He apparently inquired into being assigned TDY to southeast Asia (AKA Thailand/Vietnam), but was not accepted due to lack of flying hours and the impending retirement of the F102.

George W Bush wore this nation's uniform and served honorably. So did George HW bush, Ronald Reagan, Jimmy Carter, Gerald Ford, Richard Nixon, Lyndon Johnson, John Kennedy, Dwight Eisenhower, and Harry Truman.

“If Iran is doing this, to send a message, why do it surreptitiously, through unknown proxies, instead of an Iranian-flag destroyer?”

If you are Iran why not attack surreptitiously if you are able to do so? The Trump admin says Iran did it and that makes sense to me.
