As to the drug problem, my position on this is born out of my pesky libertarian streak which tells me that the illegal drugs business is the ideal business, a multilevel marketing scheme driven by addiction and actually supported by the government.
If the government cuts supply as you suggest, the price goes up. If the price goes up the incentive to provide supply goes up. The more the government succeeds in its war on drugs, the more it loses.
If it were otherwise we would have solved the drugs problem decades ago.
If we see the immigration problem according to the same libertarian perspective, we will take away the incentive to come to America. We will do as you suggest, cut welfare benefits etc. and we will also prosecute employers who hire illegals. But the courts stop us from doing most of this just as the courts have compelled us to turn asylum-seekers loose on the population.
We don't take the steps even where the courts have not ruled for reasons that we both know, the Democrats want votes and the Chamber of Commerce wants cheap labor. The Republicans in the Senate (and also in the house) want K St. money.
Invoke a tariff on the remittances, the Mexican source of GDP !
That will get the Mexican government attention !
Mexico depends on remittances to keep the peso stabile.

Which is why we also need to go after businesses that hire illegal aliens. Massive fines and all. Also need to stop all welfare to them.
We need many Trumps in both houses of Congress, and many more judges that adhere to our Constitution and rule of law.
This is a massive uphill battle with both legs and arms tied behind our backs.
Well no one expects Mexico to STOP the flow of migrants. If they enforce their border, stop encouraging and enabling that will cause most to choose to not make the trip.
In other words if Mexico even makes a serious attempt it will pretty much stop. Without the open help from Mexico few would be able to make the journey.
The other issue is I hope Mexico is not listening to Pelosi about the border issues. The reporter said this is the Mexican equivalent to Pelosi.
The agreement is between President Trump and President (ANLO) and it remains to be seen what will be done and how it will work out.

To end it, all we need to do is go back to original intent! Of course, this will take getting more judges on the bench that adhere to our Constitution and rule of law.
Original intent of the 14th Amendment
Senator Jacob Howard (served on the Senate Joint Committee on Reconstruction, which drafted the 14th) clearly spelled out the intent of the 14th Amendment by stating:
"Every person born within the limits of the United States, and subject to their jurisdiction, is by virtue of natural law and national law a citizen of the United States. This will not, of course, include persons born in the United States who are foreigners, aliens, who belong to the families of ambassadors or foreign ministers accredited to the Government of the United States, but will include every other class of persons. It settles the great question of citizenship and removes all doubt as to what persons are or are not citizens of the United States. This has long been a great desideratum in the jurisprudence and legislation of this country."
Sen. Lyman Trumbull, Chairman of the Judiciary Committee, author of the Thirteenth Amendment, and the one who inserted the phrase (All persons born or naturalized in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens of the United States and the States wherein they reside):
[T]he provision is, that 'all persons born in the United States, and subject to the jurisdiction thereof, are citizens.' That means 'subject to the complete jurisdiction thereof.' What do we mean by 'complete jurisdiction thereof?' Not owing allegiance to anybody else. That is what it means.
Sen. W. Williams:
I understand the words here, 'subject to the jurisdiction of the United States,' to mean fully and completely subject to the jurisdiction of the United States.

We have, at a minimum, 3 different Senators who were involved in drafting the 14th Amendment, stating on record in Congress that subject to the jurisdiction can not, does not, apply to foreigners or aliens (even if here legally).
The only thing missing for correcting the wrong introduced in the 1960's, is political will. We must do the right thing, and return to original intent of the 14th!.
Not just them, but empty out ALL of our prisons (and mental institutions, for that matter) and send them to Mexico.
