Transportation plan could give finance committee authority to hike new driver fees

The state’s powerful budget committee could have the authority to impose millions of dollars in new driving fees through a mileage-based or even tolling system if their proposal makes it into law.

The provision, included in the GOP’s sweeping transportation plan that passed the committee late Thursday, would give the 16-member committee, currently composed of 12 Republicans, the sole authority to approve any amount of new driving fees if Democratic Gov. Tony Evers signs off on the bill. Republicans on the state’s budget committee approved the plan 11-5 Thursday night.

The bill would give the Department of Transportation, controlled by Evers, $2.5 million to study how to implement a new transportation fee and come up with a recommendation for the committee to approve, deny or modify.

I am stunned that Deep Red Missouri would even consider such a thing. I know that in California they can't wait to pass per mile charge, but if we are seeing this in one of the reddest states in the country then we are going to be stuck with this all over the country within 10 years at MOST. I hate this.

They have talked about it here in California.

It’s sort of a “last straw” issue for me.

These A.H. in office won’t be satisfied until they have all our paychecks.

I have this picture in my mind of me handing over my paycheck, and them trying to sell me on some new idea since they need more money to pay for it.

Mileage based discriminates against those who live in the country. Not everyone can live within walking distance of their workplace.

It’s the nuttiest thing. Maryland tried charging rain...yep. Got the republicans the governorship over that one. That was o’malley’s Stupid law. Anyway, I can’t imagine what the United States will look like even 15 years from now. Trump is slowing it down but the states are certainly on full speed ahead.

That’s their evil plan. I just don’t understand republicans doing this. Conservatives at that.

With Republicans like these, why does Wisconsin or any other state need Democrats?

And, pray tell, what would be the supposed purpose of this tax? To fix the roads, or line people's pockets?

The story is from Wisconsin, not Missouri.

America is no better than a collection of idiotic swamp states controlled by a tyrannical federal swamp. Liberty is a word that is not used anymore nor understood.

Know the dynamic you are addressing.

State level governments on up, it’s generally Republican.

The towns and cities and even some states across America seem to have taken a stupid pill.

Those are trying to impose rules rejected by the federal government as fast as they can.
