No, most fish die by being eaten by other fish. Herons and Kingfishers and Ospreys and Eagles eat a lot of fish too.

Human fisherman are pikers compared to herons

"It’s raining today but I’m going out in my Kayak tomorrow to get some exercise and harass the Blue Gills."

I enjoy kayaking and slaying the prevalent german brown trout in one of the higher cascade lakes near me.

I keep them alive on a stringer till time to gut.

Lot of motorcyclists ride Tail of The Dragon...

Did you see the tree at Deals Gap where they have all the wrecked motorcycle parts???

BTW, about the Smokey Mountain Railroad ride...If you want to go in the fall to see the colors, you need reservations made early, and I mean EARLY...like maybe April/May...

Am just getting back to FR - have been "webless" for a few days...

Lot of motorcyclists ride Tail of The Dragon...

Yes, we saw a lot of bikers almost everywhere in the area: Tail of the Dragon, Cherohala Skyway, in the Park, along US 19 / the Oconaluftee River, etc. I'd kinda like to get my Mazda MX-3 fixed up and take it through there, someday, but, it's not a good car for a camping trip!!!

Did you see the tree at Deals Gap where they have all the wrecked motorcycle parts???

I'd sort of forgotten that, but, yeah. The "Tree of Shame". I guess they keep adding to it. I wonder what an analogous pile of car parts from the last 40 years or so would look like?

BTW, about the Smokey Mountain Railroad ride...If you want to go in the fall to see the colors, you need reservations made early, and I mean EARLY...like maybe April/May...

I'd forgotten that too (although we were there early summer.) Now that I think about it, it seems to me we called and were told "all booked up", or something to that effect.

...I never saw Lord of the Rings...:o)

Or read, I assume? Holey cr... And I thought I was "rare" because I am the only person my age I know who regularly goes "webless" a few days at a time... :-)

Vey true. My daughter and I took a drive along some areas flooded by the Mississippi River, yesterday -- it was only a modest detour on a longer trip (until we started trying to cut back over to the Interstate, anyway!) The idea was to see more of the flooding up close: It was quite impressive. We noted many cranes, herons, etc., walking (stalking) the flooded fields.

Somewhat humorously, we met up with a human "old coot" on a back road:

Me: "Do you know if this road is clear, on through?"

Him: "No, I was hoping you did."

Me (noticing he had a small net & a bucket): "Catching stuff?"

Him: "Yeah, there's been an explosion in the (threadfin) shad population." (Some of these areas have been flooded to some degree for months.) Shows me one. "I have a bluegill & bass pond over near Cape," (Cape Girardeau, I assume) "and I'm going to try to establish some shad as forage."

On this same road we went through water a few inches deep in a wooded area beside a lake - it had been there long enough to clarify: I could easily follow the yellow center line. (Daytime, non-flowing fairly clear water I could easily monitor the depth of with my door slightly open [never got past ~4" deep), 8+ inches of ground clearance, go very slow - no problem.)

A little further on, though, we came to an area where algae crusted water covered the road & depth was uncertain - not really wanting to glop up the car anyway, we turned back... I'll bet those herons and such are having, literally, "field days" out in those flooded fields!

Most of my reading is John Sanford, John Grisham, James Patterson, Tom Clancy, etc...I rarely read any science/fantasy fiction...

Understood. Still, I can’t think of anyone I’ve met in the US who, if the subject came up, has not seen at least one of the “Rings” movies or read one of the books...

Granted that when I had time to do it in the past, my sci-fi reading was mainly “hard” sci-fi, sometimes referred to as “speculative fiction”. Heinlein, Asimov, Niven, Schmitz, etc. “What if”, and then proceed reasonably logically from there. LOTR was an exception in terms of my reading fare. But then the movies came out, and, IMO, they really were well done / compelling. So, I watched them all & got a DVD set for a b’day.

But, I digress.

More urgent (and “real”) is: Can I get away for a couple hours this next weekend to the only lake in my region where trout survive year-round? :-)

Where are you located???

I’ve only fished in a lake for Trout a couple of times (when I was temporary duty near Seattle)...We just used night crawlers and still fished...

I’m much more the stream fisherman...
