A stirring and inspiring article. Unhappily, the above date is wrong - it was 1944 - but the essence of the message expressed begs forgiveness for a possible typo.
There is a corollary message to this that needs to be voiced today. The greatest generation included the folks back home, who were not only sacrificing their loved ones, friends, neighbors and countrymen - women, they were sacrificing fuel to run cars, trucks and tractors; they were sacrificing tires for those vehicles; they were sacrificing meat for their children's growth and strength... eggs, all sorts of niceties such as butter. Citizens saved old newspapers to be turned in to be cycled in to the war effort.
Today Americans think of little sacrifice when it comes to war, save those sending loved ones to risk their lives to the call of duty. Today our President announces tariffs to save our economy - already stretched by debt - and politicians and media start bleating how it could hurt the people, never mentioning how debt and open borders is already costing the citizenry.
I do wish POTUS would address the American people and ask for their patience and sacrifice in order to achieve a firmer financial footing in trade and other foreign policy matters. The American people, on the whole, are a generous and giving people who respond where need is pressing. POTUS doesn't have to belittle the naysayers, simply call for unity behind saving America and it's place in the modern world.
That appeal would render the naysayers exposed for what they are: selfish small minded folk unwilling to make any sacrifice for the common good.
