Immigration was closed to assimilate all of the new arrivals (Ellis Island, etc.) until John Kennedy restarted immigration in the 60’s. We need to do the same thing today - and for the same reason.

The Founding Fathers attitude was clear, that immigrants were welcome but had to fend for themselves. No welfare, no handouts, no “resettlement” services. And the Frontier was harsh. During the 18th and 19th centuries about half the immigrants who came here gave it up and went back home.

Only the robust and tough remained. These, became Americans.
