Booker proposes capping rent paid by Americans at 30 percent of their income
Washington Post ^ | June 5, 2020 | John Wagner

As part of a broader plan intended to make housing more affordable, Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) on Wednesday proposed a tax credit that would effectively cap the rent most Americans pay at 30 percent of their income — a move his presidential campaign said would help 57 million people.

The release of Booker’s proposals comes amid plans from several Democratic candidates on a wide array of subjects ahead of the party’s first debate later this month. Though Booker has traveled extensively to early nominating states, he has yet to gain traction in polls among the crowded field of Democrats.

With the release of his proposals Wednesday, Booker sought to highlight his tenure as mayor of Newark, during which his administration made considerable investments in the struggling city’s housing stock.

So if I want to live in the Upper East Side of NYC I would only have to pay 30% of my income with the rest of the rent coming to four or five figures a month being made up for by the government and other taxpayers. He claims the tax credit will be based on the "fair-market rent" but his proposal means "fair-market rent" will increase vastly in desirable areas.

No, it’s easier than that. The government can just confiscate/nationalize all properties on the Upper East Side (or anywhere). Then the rent can be whatever they want it to be. It’s so simple..

What about all us poor schlubs that pay a mortgage? We get to help people pay their rent too and we get no subsidy?

Well, if he controls how much individuals are allowed to pay, as opposed to what property owners can charge for rent, he may have a good idea. “Sorry, go look for another place to rent, you can’t afford this one. The government says so.” It would be like a mandatory savings account! He should cap how much of their income people can charge in credit cards, too. He.might singlehandedly eliminate are personal bankruptcies!

Bingo! I’ll immediately move to Atherton, California. The average house price will zoom from today’s $6 million to $20 million. At the same time, I’ll change out of my high-tech, high-stress job to a stock boy at Whole Foods.

I’ll sleep easy knowing the government will cover any housing cost over 30% of my $25,000 income.

Is this a great country or what? Booker 2020!!

Why don’t we just give everyone a house? We could have a national lottery:

Next up...a nice 2 bedroom in the outer Nome Alaska area-—and it goes to Bill Smith from Oakland.
