No reason for us to be bringing in raw produce from Mexico anyway.
And the cost of it as it comes from Mexico is something like a quarter of its ultimate cost. So 5% is about 1% and 25% is about 6%.
The poor are the ones hurt most by far with the cheap labor of illegals.
But as I have been posting this morning, there are more concrete and effective steps that Trump could have taken and be taking, but isn’t.

Oh, and basic veggies are pretty cheap: about $1/lb on average for a careful shopper.

Like many effeminate men, Graham needs to live vicariously as a "me too" guy for some alpha male in order to feel masculine and validated. For years, the alpha male he latched onto was McCain.
With McCain out of the picture, Lindsey seems to have latched on to Trump. Disturbing? Certainly. But on matters of policy, it works in our favor.
The other (worse) explanation is that this is all an act to make sure he doesn't get primaried out by a more "Trumpian" candidate in 2020, after which we'll be back to the old, open borders milquetoast liberal Lindsey.
Yeah, the Cruz thing really PO’d me. He is not up for re-election until ‘24 and I doubt he has given up on his thoughts for a shot at POTUS then.
His BS over the last few days I put down to his wife (the Goldman Sachs Managing Director) making sure he stayed on the side of the $$$ folks. Sickening. And completely tone deaf to a YUUUUUUUUGE issue that the GOP rank and file really wants done differently than our betters have done it over the last 4 decades.

Just remember though, Linds is up for re-election soon, so it could be an act just to get votes. Granted it’s a bit early for the re-election turnaround, but still.
If he’s still acting like this after he’s re-elected then I’ll believe the conversion is genuine. It’s looking pretty good though I’ll say that. He did seem to really be genuinely disgusted at his “friends” during the whole Gorsich debacle. And since then seems to have turned a corner.
But we’ll see.

I wish Graham & Trump would present the costs of taking care of the illegals for the unforeseeable future against the cost to American consumers for a short time to get the tariffs to do what Trump intends for them to do.
The daily/weekly/monthly/ annual cost of taking care of all these invaders is enormous.
THAT COST will never change-—they will be sucking at the American taxpayer until they die-—many years into the future.
You know the cost to us for all this illegal invasion is costing way more than any tariff they will have to pay. I was looking at the products we import from Mexico and I can’t believe we couldn’t do without those products or get them somewhere else until they stop the invasion.

Friggin way too many Republicans supporting illegal immigration, although I’m concerned its due to Spygate.
If we had good high school technical and industrial education for our students who are not college bound, there would be far less need for immigrants. When I was in high school in the 1950s we could choose the Liberal Arts College track, the Science College track, the Office and Clerical track, or the Industrial Skills track. Do schools have anything like that these days?
Last week Giant and Harris Teeter had apples ranged from $1.45 to $1.95 a pound. Mushrooms were $1.75 for 8 ounces on sale. Blueberries on sale for $2.00 a pint. Strawberries on sale $2.50 a pound. Grapes ranging from $1.99 to $3.49 a pound. Those were a few that I was interested in. A twelve oz. bag of Spinach $1.99. This in an urban mid Atlantic location. What part of the country are you pricing?
I am in the Northeast, one of the most expensive parts of the country.
Reliably, onions, potatoes, cabbage, winter squash and bananas are to be had at less than a dollar a pound.
Frozen spinach and peas and fresh asparagus and grapes on sale, a dollar a pound. In season, apples and zukes and green beans and summer squash are a dollar a pound.
In season, lettuce is a dollar to two a pound. In two pound bags, fresh kale and collard greens are available year-round for two dollars a pound. Go to an ethnic market (e.g., Hispanic or Chinese or Indian) and prices are at least as good, sometimes better.
Good, he should let Mitch know to stop interfering with the negotiations.
At 80 I have some mobility problems. I have been driven to some ethnic markets in the suburbs and found good prices. However those near where I live only carry grains and beans, seeds and other non perishables. Since I am trying to loose weight (successfully) by a very low carb diet, most of what they sell cannot be used by me until I have lost 20 pounds, and then only in modest amounts. Also I cannot eat the potatoes, winter squash or bananas for the carbs, and onions are a relish, not a main course. I have been using a fair amount of cabbage. Once or twice this year some grapes have been 99c, but a bargain is $1.99 and usually they are higher. I have also seen fresh asparagus sometimes as low as $1.99 Frozen veggies are rarely a dollar unless it is the 8 or 12 oz packages. I did see fresh carrots for $1 a pound today. So your advice may help some, but where I live it does not tell the story.
With the teachers unions and colleges having succeeded so royally in mucking up education, we unfortunately seem to need another four years of schooling to get people often still to a lesser level of basic education.
But most illegals come here themselves uneducated and they learn on the job—in large part because taxpayers subsidize the cost of illegal laborers, who regularly undercut our low-skill citizens in the market.
And I get it, for those like you of limited mobility and likely dependent on social security, etc., you favor anything that at its most immediate keeps consumer prices down. But as I pointed out, even going to the threatened, not likely to be imposed, highest level of tariff, at 25%, would only raise produce prices approximately 6%.
And American sovereignty and the future of the country are yes, more important than subsidizing fresh, year-round berries from Mexico for purchase those of low-income and low-mobility.
Basic food is still relatively incredibly cheap in the US.
Oh, and I really wasn’t offering advice, so much as an argument against giving special breaks and subsidies for importing produce from Mexico.
If there is one thing that I will never, EVER believe, it’s that Lindsey Graham’s “conversion” is genuine. Even if he still acts like this after he’s re-elected, I’ll STILL see him as a fake.
Here’s what I think is really going on with Graham. He wants to avoid being prosecuted for his role in arming the Syrian “rebels.” He believes that if he plays nice with Trump, he’ll remain a free man. However, Trump won’t always be in office to protect him. So when Trump leaves in 2024, Graham will run for President. If he wins, he will update to Lindsey 3.0.
Lindsey 3.0 will be the worst incarnation of Graham, by far. He will dedicate his time to erasing evidence of his crimes as a Senator, and ruthlessly targeting anyone who stands in his way. I’m talking about corruption that rivals that of the Clintons. Lindsey 3.0 will be a Republican Hillary, if not worse.
In my opinion, Graham is more evil than McCain. At least McCain stayed loyal to the neocon cause, as terrible as that cause is. Graham is loyal to nobody. He is willing to stab anybody in the back, RINO, Trumplican, or Democrat.
