Russia told the West on Wednesday the Normandy landings on D-Day in 1944 did not play a decisive role in ending World War II and that the Allied war effort should not be exaggerated.
Moscow's comments might irk war veterans in Britain where the 75th anniversary on Wednesday of the largest seaborne invasion in history was marked at a ceremony in Portsmouth attended by Queen Elizabeth and world leaders including Donald Trump and Angela Merkel.
Speaking at a weekly news conference in Moscow, Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova offered a tribute to those who died on the western front of World War II and said Moscow appreciated the Allied war effort.
"It should of course not be exaggerated. And especially not at the same time as diminishing the Soviet Union's titanic efforts, without which this victory simply would not have happened," she said.

"As historians note, the Normandy landing did not have a decisive impact on the outcome of World War II and the Great Patriotic War. It had already been pre-determined as a result of the Red Army's victories, mainly at Stalingrad (in late 1942) and Kursk (in mid-1943)," Zakharova told reporters.
More than 150,000 allied troops launched an air, sea and land attack on Normandy on June 6, 1944 that ultimately led to the liberation of western Europe from Nazi Germany.
Moscow, which had been fighting German forces in the east for almost three years by the time of D-Day, and gradually pushing them back from early 1943, had been urging Britain's Winston Churchill to open a second front as far back as August 1942.
"There was a wish to wait for the maximum weakening of Germany's military power from its enormous losses in the east, while reducing losses in the west," she said.
And I’m sure Russia scoffs at any mention of Lend/Lease.
Perhaps if Stalin wouldn’t have sided with Hitler at the outset, there would have been no need for the “Great Patriotic War”.
D-day saved Europe and everything under Nazi attack/invasion.
All the money and supplies we gave Stalin were though.
Does the Putin Gang also now deny the importance of Lend-Lease?
Then again, what should the Russians expect? Thanks to Progressive Libtards taking over our schools, our younger generations are lucky if they know anything positive about our own contributions to World War II.
They also forget the pounding the Krauts got from day and night bombing. That helped them out a lot. And if the Krauts didn’t have to fight the allies on the West they might have crushed Russia.
Oh, suck balls, Russia.
WE never signed a Non-Aggression Pact with Adolf, Ivan.
Yeah. Maybe the USSR wouldn’t have lost 25 million lives if it first hadn’t sold its soul to Germany for a piece of Poland, and then compounded it by driving their troops through minefields at the point of a gun.
Soviets were total scum. Imprisioned their own soldiers who became POW’s and survived to come home, only to rot in a gulag felling timber in the snow until they died.
Screw them and the memory of them. I feel bad for the individual soldiers and civilians who lost their lives, but if Russia/Soviets want to talk about their “great sacrifices” I could give a crap less.
Russians should be grateful to the Americans for allowing them to enter FIRST and take over Berlin. Americans stopped short of entering Berlin on purpose. Patton was headed right to Berlin when Eisenhower said “NO”!
It wasn’t the Soviet Union’s efforts that did it in for the Nazi’s in the East. It was the Soviet winter that did them in.
It was the soviet winter that did the Nazi’s in in the East, not the soviet military.
I meant “Screw them” referring to the scum in power from then to now in the Soviet Union and Russia who want to paint their sacrifices in whatever light suits them.
Not the memory of the individuals. They were just people who trusted their government only to find out what their government was really like when they woke up to a knock on the door.
Bingo.
The US produced and provided about 30% of the trucks and warplanes to the Soviet war machine during WWII. The trucks alone were critical prime movers for their supporting infantry to ride in and keep up with their armored forces as they pushed back the Nazis- and thats while we were simultaneously providing wartime equipment to Great Britain and equipping ourselves for fighting around the globe.
Whatevs, Russkies.
Lend lease was absolutely critical to the Soviet effort. A relative of mine was in the merchant marines handmade the murmansk trip several times. He spent the rest of his life amazed that he lived. And the Russians do you have something to be proud of in the seven out of every nine dead German soldiers were killed on the Eastern Front.
The truth is that they did most of the heavy lifting. And the truth of it is, that had the Landings in Italy France and Normandy not been conducted, it would have been a much longer harder fight for them to make it all the way to Berlin. It’s also just as true that had we landed in 42 we would have faced a much larger, better equipped, and more dangerous Nazi army. The fact of the matter is we benefited from their effort, and they’ve benefited from D-Day and the fight in Western Europe. Neither of us really could have accomplished it without the other, which is why that Alliance existed
The only reason Stalin survived:
1. Lend-Lease - Nearly all of Stalin’s ammo and more than 70% of his trucks were provided by FDR, whose administration was already riddled with commie spies.
2. SPY - Stalin had a spy in Tokyo named Richard Sorge, who had contacts at the German Embassy there. As allies, Germany and Japan kept one another generally aware of their general intentions. Sorge heard that Japan had no intention to invade the USSR therefore Stalin could transfer half of his troops tied down in a useless guarding action there to Stalingrad and Kursk. For that reason Hitler faced what appeared to be an endless tide of humanity opposing him.
3. Winter - Mud, then froze.
4. Hirler - He meddled in the plans of his generals.
The most critical was maybe #2.
Right. Imagine all of those 88MM flak guns on the Western Front and their personnel employed in the heavy bomber anti-aircraft role employed instead as anti-tank guns on the Eastern Front.
The toll they might have taken would no doubt have significantly impeded the Red Army’s offensives.
