In fact, while those laws were being passed, the Republicans wanted to put in an amendment that called for review of the effect of the laws to be studied and the laws sunsetted if they didn’t effect crime rates. A Dem representative said that the laws were only to make people feel safe and could not be expected to effect crime rates. So, no one is actually willing to argue that these laws do make us safer.
