The situation makes more sense if I remember that president Trump is truly an independent American president - His campaign was a take over of the republican party using it as a vehicle to enact what he thinks we need to make America awesome now (MAAN???). It turns out most of those ideas are conservative and more jarring for me originalist American.
This tariff thing must really have them nervous (and "they" must be getting nice kickbacks) - the president is challenging conventional wisdom and proving it to be not only disingenuous (that what is called -free trade) but providing an alternative that is also serving the nations interest in other ways. Lots of us are reconsidering how international trade was being done and we came to the conclusion that he was right. We were being ripped off and sold out under the guise of open markets - in reality the elites of nations have been trading favors, slave labor for technology for money, access back and forth for the last 35 years.

I wouldn’t be so proud of being a non-Republican...I’m one of those taking over the Republican party while you virtue signal your virtuosity...give me a break. And, since President Trump ran as a Republican he was smart enough to know that’s what needs doing.
