If pro-lifers are going to oppose the killing of unborn children, we are told over and over again, then we must be willing to take care of these children and their families even after theyre born. And since we dont, its widely assumed and repeated, we have no right to oppose abortion.
As if this line of argument wasnt repeated enough, its become especially popular in the wake of the new anti-abortion laws in Alabama, Georgia, Ohio, and now Missouri.
For example, a recent political cartoon by Nick Anderson depicts pro-lifers gazing in awe at a pregnant womans belly and promising the child, Well do whatever we can to protect your life. In the next frame, the very same pro-lifers scream at the newborn, Now youre on your own! Get a job, moocher!
Apparently believing this same caricature of uncaring abortion opponents led Times of Israel journalist Sarah Tuttle-Singer to tweet out a challenge last week: Dear Pro-Life friends: what have you personally done to support lower income single mothers? Ill wait.
Well, at last count, she received some responsesover 13 thousand of them, in fact, answering her rhetorical question. I doubt they were what she and other pro-abortion activists were expecting. A Twitter user named Barbara wrote back: Great question! Since I am unable to foster, I often babysit for my friends who do. I donate regularly to a foster closet. We help pay bills for people in crisis situations, & my oldest kids help when they are able.
Another user named Joshua wrote: [We] became foster parents, which led to adoption. Intentionally worked to build relationship with and support our sons birth mother. Helped her with buying furniture & more when she got out of prison We were part of a movement of 30+ foster/adopt families from our church doing the same, with a network of hundreds in our church supporting us in tangible ways.
A pastor named Hans replied: Started a non-profit that gives free clothing, diapers, etc to those in need. Fostered a teen mom. Fostered another mothers three children while she got her life back on track. Found them housing. Gave them Jesus. Gave them a church family who helps and supports them.
The stories went on and on. The thousands of replies are more than just anecdotal answers to a journalists misfired question. Pro-lifers really have put their money, time, and love where their mouths are.
Think of the nations pregnancy care centerswhich offer supplies and training and parenting classes to mothers and continue doing so despite being maligned as fake clinics. They currently outnumber abortion mills three-to-one, and are overwhelmingly run and staffed by womenmost of whom are volunteers. Alabama alone has more than seventy of these centers, all of which rely on the private support of people who believe in their mission.
And thats not all. Alabamas governor, Kay Iveywho just signed that states newest abortion restriction into lawannounced back in November that families in her state set a new record for adopting children out of the foster system.
Is there more to be done? Of course! Could pro-lifers specifically do more? Of course! But heres an important question asked back to our pro-abortion opponents: Why should an unborn childs right to life depend on how many social programs, charities, or adoptive parents are available after he or she is born? Think about whats being implied here: that needy babies are better off deadthat the kindest thing we can do is kill themand that if youre unable to take in every single unplanned child, you have no right to speak against abortion.
This is barbaric nonsense. As some have pointed out, its kind of like saying you cant oppose killing homeless people unless you turn your home into a shelter. And it misses the single most crucial fact in the entire debate: that abortion doesnt prevent a baby. It kills one. Which is why, of the two sides in our current, intensifying debate, its clear who is most deeply invested in the lives of unplanned childrenthose who think they first and foremost deserve to live.
If I see my neighbor beating his 5-year-old to death, am I morally unable to do anything to stop it unless I'm willing or able to adopt the child? Of course not, and (almost) every pro-abort would agree. The only reason they see abortion differently is that they refuse to acknowledge the humanity of the unborn child.
Yes. This is why we have food stamps. This is why we have the WIC program. This is why we have Medicaid... to help with the birth and life...not create death.
Wow, she didn’t even have to wait.
Kaitlin Bennett (Liberty Hangout) encountered this very question when she was interviewing pro-abortion people in Austin just a few days ago. It’s on YouTube, and it’s too painful to watch again, so this is one of the few times I’m not going to add a link. Morgana might have posted it.
Unwanted pregnancies are merely a symptom of a bigger problem. The sexual revolution has been lost. If people are not in the position to bring a child into the world and properly raise him/her, then they should NOT be engaging in the act that causes this to happen. Simple as that.
Dear Pro-Life friends: what have you personally done to support lower income single mothers? Ill wait.
You don’t have to wait I can answer now. Paid my Taxes Federal State and Local. Donate to churches that help. Voted for Donald Trump who in turn brought more and better jobs to the scene. Push my representatives to do immigration reform and get the wall built so the illegals stop draining the system set aside to help those single mothers!
Actually I heard a Republican woman say that. In the 1990s. She wants all blacks, poor, Latinos, etc to be aborted because it costs too much to care for them. I was shocked.
She is also a Freeper. Shocked me. Shes very active n Republican politics. I wonder how many people agree with her, R and D.
Amen, Crusader!
That “I’ll wait” at the end of the post is so sarcastic. Like, “I know none of you will have an answer to this question. Gotcha!”
Yes! All that needs to be done is to change the laws so it’s as easy for Christians to adopt those babies as it is for homosexuals.
Be willing to take care of them and their families? Are you kidding me? The number of taxpayer funded social services programs is staggering.
This argument is an attempt to shift responsibility from the person directly involved in the decision to have unprotected sex to those who decry what they perceive as a murderous act to shed that responsibility.
What if the argument is extended to a mother who gives birth but later decides children are too much of a responsibility and wants to shed herself of the child. Post birth abortion up to the age of legal personhood of the child (18 years in most states)? Or to simply abandon them to the state or private adoption of some kind?? If the latter, I think the parents should be taxed to pay some portion of the cost of raising the child by the state or private adopters.
To what extent do women use abortion as a form of birth control? Their failure to use birth control to prevent pregnancy, is a factor. The irresponsible mothers want someone else to take care of their babies. Being pro choice, said mothers want someone to kill the baby for them, so they are not inconvenienced.
Mother Theresa said "give them to me."
How many of the abortion pimps have taken in mothers who claim they murder their children because of financial problems?
It’s not my job to take care of your unwanted children, but I’ll not let them starve in the streets.
actually if you are getting government handouts, birth control should be mandatory. I’m a big fan of “if you can’t feed them, don’t breed them”
Now i said birth control, not abortion.
That’s a very satisfying Twitter thread.

THE question is whether or not all humans have a right to life. Once you start to bring into the argument all the potential consequences, such as bad parents or economics, you have muddied the waters. No child should be killed because of the sins of the parents.
