The Death of Merit and the Race to Mediocrity in Our Increasingly Marxist Universities
PJ Media ^ | 28 May 2019 | Philip Carl Salzman

Posted on 05/28/2019 7:52:45 PM PDT by Rummyfan

The television series “The Enemy Within” begins by informing the viewer that there are 100,000 foreign spies in the United States working to undermine and destabilize America. China has sent hundreds of thousands of students to America to gain maximum access to the West’s advanced knowledge and technology, some through education alone, some through espionage.

While the foreign threat is real and serious, it pales beside the internal threat represented by the North American education complex. There are 756,900 teachers and professors in Canada, and 5.2 million in the U.S. Almost all of these professors and teachers are daily resolutely and relentlessly attacking Western culture, rejecting American culture, and advocating cultural Marxism.

How did this come about? During the 1960s and 1970s, two converging social movements transformed the culture of education. One was the adoption of Marxism by a wide range of North American university professors in the social sciences and humanities. The other was the widespread adoption of feminist theory. Together, Marxism and feminism redefined North American society as a hierarchy of oppression, with white, patriarchal capitalists at the top, and poor lesbians of color at the bottom. All citizens were redefined as members of racial, economic, gender, sexual, and ethnic classes, with people of white oppressing people of color, males oppressing females, rich oppressing poor, heterosexuals oppressing LGBTQ++, Christians and Jews oppressing Muslims, and so on. This approach is called “social justice” theory.

“Social justice” subjectivity and advocacy have replaced the search for reality and truth in schools and universities. Objectivity is viewed as a tool that straight white men use to suppress females, people of color, and those of various sexualities. Today, in universities, identity is the most important “reality,” and everyone has their “own truth.” If you argue along with science that men and women are biologically different, you are rejected as sexist. If you argue along with science that men cannot be women and women cannot be men, you are rejected as a transphobe. If you argue that African American culture has serious problems, you are rejected as a racist. If you argue that there is discrimination in favor of, not against females, you are rejected as a sexist. Research and evidence on such matters are suppressed. There is not just peer pressure against views contrary to “social justice” fantasies, but these views are actively suppressed by administrators, the many “equity, diversity, and inclusion” officers, whose job is to suppress them.

This happened because conservatives refuse to become teachers. They are much too good for that, don’t you know. So now the hand that rocks the cradle is almost uniformly liberal, and conservatives sit around whining all day long about the direction our country is going.

The die was cast 'way back in the '60s when college administrators bowed to the radicals and let them take over the universities. That radicalism has spread to all levels of government education as grads steeped in college-level Marxism took over as new crops of K-12 teachers.

The problem has been apparent to me over the past 30 years. But when I've tried to raise awareness even among my conservative friends, the reaction has been total apathy. The termites have bored so deeply into our government's structure I doubt we can keep the house from falling down.

“The die was cast ‘way back in the ‘60s when college administrators bowed to the radicals and let them take over the universities.”

Without a doubt!

I remember reading a book by one of those radicals saying that they thought they would never get away with occupying administrators’ offices and buildings. When the administrators caved to all their demands they couldn’t believe that it was so easy.

And it’s been like that ever since. It’s what happens when the so called adults let their spoiled rotten kids take over.

We’ll be paying a big price for this abdication of responsibility.

Conservatives pay to send their kids to these indocrination centers and are even proud that their kid “goes to Brown” or some other place.

That was the harvest. The sowing was at least back in the 30s: The Frankfurt School and The Long March Through the Institutions.

They succeeded in the 60s because Marxists had already infiltrated and hired and promoted their own.

To the writer Salzmann. For Pete’s sake, if you are talking about some kind of television/cable show, tell us about it, not just it’s title.

Is it based on Trevor Loudon’s two books of the same name, “The Enemies Within” and “The Enemies Within: Communists, Marxists, and Socialists in the US Congress”, 2010 and 2013-15?

He also has a documentary with that same name.

If not Loudon, then who wrote this television series, where is is showing, when, etc?

The subject sounds very interesting and I’d like to see the series.

American universities have always had a crisis of authority, going back to their founding as denominational schools in the colonial era. The old-style churches assumed their institutions would turn out Protestant like the churches themselves were, but Protestantism being more political than theological, what they actually ended up with was post-Protestant politics without the Biblical trappings.

That is the key. A self-conscious, organized and determined minority can wield vastly disproportionate influence in large institutions. If that minority hacks out the ability to control hiring and promotion, it is a threat take over. Once that is done, it will act as a gatekeeper to perpetuate its control. What the left has done in the universities is similar to what the gay mafia has done in the Catholic hierarchy.

True. If you want to do deep history you can look back to the founding of the Fabian Society in 1884, whose goal was to spread so-called "Democratic Socialism throughout the world. Members like George Bernard Shaw and H.G. Wells lent it a certain intellectual chic that was happily propagated by American colleges and universities. I remember getting a big dose of it myself as a college student in the '50s.

Arguably even earlier than that, if Timothy Dwight’s 1799 sermon is to be believed regarding Voltaire and Diderot taking over the French Academy being one of their six steps:

“About the year 1728, Voltaire, so celebrated for his wit and brilliancy and not less distinguished for his hatred of Christianity and his abandonment of principle, formed a systematical design to destroy Christianity and to introduce in its stead a general diffusion of irreligion and atheism. For this purpose he associated with himself Frederick the II, king of Prussia, and Mess. D’Alembert and Diderot, the principal compilers of the Encyclopedie, all men of talents, atheists and in the like manner abandoned. // “The principle parts of this system were: // “1. The compilation of the Encyclopedie: in which with great art and insidiousness the doctrines of … Christian theology were rendered absurd and ridiculous; and the mind of the reader was insensibly steeled against conviction and duty. // “2. The overthrow of the religious orders in Catholic countries, a step essentially necessary to the destruction of the religion professed in those countries. // “3. The establishment of a sect of philosophists to serve, it is presumed as a conclave, a rallying point, for all their followers. // “4. The appropriation to themselves, and their disciples, of the places and honors of members of the French Academy, the most respectable literary society in France, and always considered as containing none but men of prime learning and talents. In this way they designed to hold out themselves and their friends as the only persons of great literary and intellectual distinction in that country, and to dictate all literary opinions to the nation. // “5. The fabrication of books of all kinds against Christianity, especially such as excite doubt and generate contempt and derision. Of these they issued by themselves and their friends who early became numerous, an immense number; so printed as to be purchased for little or nothing, and so written as to catch the feelings, and steal upon the approbation, of every class of men. // “6. The formation of a secret Academy, of which Voltaire was the standing president, and in which books were formed, altered, forged, imputed as posthumous to deceased writers of reputation, and sent abroad with the weight of their names. These were printed and circulated at the lowest price through all classes of men in an uninterrupted succession, and through every part of the kingdom.”
