Growing up high: Neurobiological consequences of adolescent cannabis use
science daily ^ | May 26, 2019 | Canadian Association for Neuroscience

Posted on 05/27/2019 6:36:09 PM PDT by Mount Athos

About one in five Canadian adolescents uses cannabis and its recent legalization across the country warrants investigation into the consequence of this use on the developing brain.

Cannabis use was linked to impairments in working memory and inhibitory control, which is required for self-control. Cannabis use was also linked to deficits in memory recall and perceptual reasoning. Alcohol use was not linked to impairments in these cognitive functions, suggesting cannabis could have more long-term effects than alcohol.

Adolescent exposure to THC induces changes in specific a region of the brain called the prefrontal cortex (PFC) and in a brain circuit, the mesolimbic pathway, that closely resemble the abnormalities observed in schizophrenia. Furthermore, adolescent THC exposure also caused affective and cognitive abnormalities including deficits in social interactions, memory processing and anxiety regulation.

I smoked mj for about 2 years or a bit more. Of course it was very low grade compared to what’s around now. I know how much it affected my ability to think rationally even then. Thank God I stopped all drug use at age 20.

Sorry, but this is a cutting edge medical study. Other medical studies recently done show the link between heavy cannabis consumption, schizophrenia, and violence.

Yes... violence. Not because they are stoned, but because of the suppression of the prefrontal lobes of the brain.

Interesting enough, the recent advances in brain studies show the suppression of the brain core with just one dosage of psyllium that lasts over a year. While useful for treating some forms of depression it does cause personality changes.

Due to a misspent youth I am quite familiar with the effects of these drugs on people, if you have spent much time with a schroomer, you may have noticed their increasing loss of connection with reality or simple cognitive discernment.

Isn’t it interesting that the Government now is trying to sell this to the citizenry, one would think they do not have our best interests at heart.

What a lot of nonsense that it causes any lasting problems. Millions of people out there are living proof that is bunk.

Statements like this are what the younger people are pointing to as evidence that pot does no harm.

You must be proud.

As a youth I smoked a fair share of pot and also oral LSD. The pot clogs the mind a bit but listening to music was enjoyable. So too the LSD providing I didn’t take too much. The LSD increased my cognitive abilities for a few hours but the immediate after effects were fatigue of mind and body. Sometimes took a day or two recovery.

Me too about that age. However, I did notice a subtle difference. Difficult to tell, but I do believe that it was a permanent change.... other than the issue of changing the brain chemistry to favor the THC.

We form habits in our lives. Many habits while pleasurable we regret because they become negative to our overall person. It is wise to avoid those things which will cause us to form negative habits. Wise certainly but not easy for we are drawn to pleasure no matter how unwise and will make excuses to pursue our bad habits. We should warn the young that they are entering a labyrinth when embracing habits that are pleasurable but not positive.

*** “My experience: Every kid in high school as well as myself smoked the stuff. By the time I got into college it was obvious that good grades and pot were not compatible so the pot took a back seat.

What gets me is the fact that I could never solve the simplest calculation after the smallest consumption but there are a few people that I’ve worked with that were brilliant at work as programmers and engineers and smoked amounts that would have made completely useless. The stuff has different effects on people but by far the most common effect is effecting an amotivational condition on the user so they are prone to basically being lazy” ***

You basically summed it up for me but with (1) exception
I was the one that couldn’t think or solve problems if I smoked even a tiny amount... 40 years later I can look back and with certainty is that once I quit smoking dope #1 It took 3 years to get my Brain back 100% and #2 Once you get your Brain back the World is Wonderful
(Pot can make you exceptionally Stupid and Lazy, some idiots are actually memorable, I’ll find what homeless shelter they are living in and take them to our 50th re-union because I can still remember them)

What a lot of nonsense that it causes any lasting problems. Millions of people out there are living proof that is bunk.

You can look at American culture and society today and THINK that it has nothing to do with drug use? Drug use is a sacrament of the left. It's why we live in a depraved culture that is increasingly becoming more easily manipulated and led by leftist propaganda.

I agree. There’s a lot more damage done to brain and ability to think rationally than mere THC receptacles. The damage mj does is very wide ranging; iow affects cognitive thinking and emotional control and maturity. I saw once and wish I could images of brain activity of an mj user and non user. Very different.

Are you quoting from that 2002 article again?

The evidence is mounting that there is not a pre-existing condition, but that cannabis directly causes the brain morphology changes. The effect happens in developing brains, which, according to a psychologist I saw at a conference recently, continue development until about age 30.

I seriously wonder if you have some financial stake in legal and widespread marijuana use, you are so quick to dismiss the growing body of experimental evidence that shows pretty definitely that marijuana use is not benign.
