UYANG, ChinaOne night this September, construction supervisor Chen Shouli fired off a joke in a chat group.
Haha, he typed on his black iPhone 7, followed by an off-color wisecrack about a rumored love triangle involving a celebrity and one of Chinas most senior government officials.
Four days later, he says, the police telephoned, ordering him in for questioning.
I thought, I havent done anything wrong, have I? Im law-abiding, recalls Mr. Chen, a wiry 41-year-old. So I went in. Once I arrived, they wouldnt let me leave.
Mr. Chen was locked in a cell for five days, he says. According to the police report, his comment on the WeChat messaging app was deemed picking quarrels and provoking trouble, a broad offense that encompasses gang fighting and destruction of public property and is punishable by detention without trial.

Unless you are discussing sensitive information why would you give a damn if the Chinese government can read it? They can’t arrest you in another country. I have to use it to deal with my Chinese wholesale suppliers because other messaging apps are banned there, but then again I have no interest whatsoever in discussing or getting involved with China’s internal politics.
Proglibs in the U.S. panting and drooling over the possability...
.
Jailed five days?
He’s lucky he didn’t have his wang cut off and his “social standing” points good for government services reduced to negative numbers for four generations.
Does Cisco get a commission for every Chinese (or other) person caught and punished ?
Sobering, but really:
How really far behind China are we..?
In many cases the wunderkinds permitting China to do this are playing foosball in Menlo Park, Cupertino, Mountain View...
They are the “Don’t Be Evil” tribe.
Nah. Unlucky is when they remove a kidney, tell you to get out and next time they will take the other kidney. Now that's China.
A lot of times they don’t find out the measures against them until they attempt to travel outside of China, and are stopped.
They’ll be turned away, told they can’t leave China.
Or they’ll be permitted to leave, but only with a much smaller amount of money, etc.
They’ve even pulled this with FOREIGNERS (including Americans and Canadians) living long-term in China.

Weird response.
Doesn’t make much sense.
Sad, but not so surprising. The Chinese version of
Naked and Afraid involves blood hounds and guns.

The technocracy in the West love the chinese commie model of governance. They really do
Coming to Amerika.
I read it twice and can’t make heads or tails from it.
China sure could give you trouble indirectly through your vendors there.
Yeah. Thanks.
“How really far behind China are we..?”
We maybe ahead of China. I believe that the inexplicable voting behavior of politicians, supreme court justices and others becomes explicable if you consider that US Intel agencies might have electronic communications to use as leverage if votes dont go a certain way, or certain opinions are not expressed in public. Mitt Romney, for instance. Justice Roberts, for instance.
If you think Hillary didn’t get the modern day version of the “FBI files” she had on her enemies back in the 90s, you aren’t cynical enough.
Not going to happen. Trump back in next year.
