Miracles do happen, said Julia Eller, mother of Amanda Eller, the 35-year-old yoga instructor and physical therapist who was found alive Friday after surviving 17 days in the rugged forest above Makawao.
During an emotional news conference at Maui Memorial Medical Center, where the younger woman was being treated for a broken lower leg and infection due to severe sunburn on her lower extremities, Ellers mother recounted how her daughter survived by eating strawberry guava fruit and drinking stream water.
Eller got lost May 8 while hiking within the Makawao Forest Reserve, an expansive wilderness area with areas of dense forest, steep ascents and rugged terrain. In an interview with the New York Times, Eller said she lost her way after briefly leaving the trail and spent the rest of the day and night traveling in the wrong direction trying to make it back to her car.
Eller said that at times she felt like giving up, but the only option I had was life or death.

Been in that area, see Maui isn’t all that wide across the middle of the island which is actually two islands joined.
She was far away than where they were searching, and the guy that found her was fired from his day job by refusing to stop looking for her.
If i could afford it i would definitely live along the Haleakala road part way up the mountain, so beautiful. I left ashes of my departed dear friend Mollie Ragonesi along the road going to the summit of Haleakala.
There were probably other wild fruits besides guava. In Kauai, every time I turned around my brother was picking something for us to eat. I was ready to rename him Euell Gibbons.
So will you if you follow it too closely.
Another thing is she was lucky she didn’t encounter a large pig herd on those off trail trails she was walking . :igs are smart , they would easily see she was by herself , had no weapons and no dogs . Then to a pig , a small defenseless human becomes a food source . They can really mess you up , and they will eat you . All of you , without remainder . People talk about people ‘disappearing’ in Hawaii’s forests , it’s not pot growers , it’s the pigs . Trust me , I know .
“she left her phone in her car , she wanted to unplug for awhile (take the phone , just turn it off)”
Yep. She’d have been fine if she’d taken her phone with her.
Sounds like an episode of I Shouldnt Be Alive.
I get It,
Water Falls!
I hiked alone in Yosemite once. I briefly left the trail to relieve myself and suddenly I was looking down a sheer cliff face. One more step and would have been gone. I never hiked alone again and I always made sure I knew I was near a cliff.
Maui has a ring road. Goes all along the island by the shore. Walk downhill until you get to the road.
My car battery was low on water so I pulled over at a gas station in Big Bear Lake and filled it up. I took a drink out of the hose and put it back.
Next day, I had a bossa nova dance class going on in my stomach. I went to the doctor. He checked me out and said, “You went to Big Bear, didn’t you?”
LOL
Thank God she’s alive and well. It sounds to me like her big mistake was going off the trail. And also, hiking alone in a wilderness area.
Prolly not. So much interdiction happening. It’s not like the movie “the Beach”. He got lost - fell off a cliff or drowned. Body eaten by boar or washed down to the ocean.
Ever been to Waimea Canyon? Not really anyplace to grow pot.. Boars and brimble so thick you could get stuck just a few feet in and never get out. Or you could just fall off one of the hundreds of shear cliffs.
“I’ve been told by losertarians that marijuana is a victimless crime.”
Stumble upon a big moonshine operation while they’re firing it and see what happens...
Violent moonshiners and illegal growers only exist because of prohibition/revenuers. They are not a product of a society that is “too free”. Rather a society that is too restricted and taxed
I’m looking at this place on the map and it looks only a few square miles. What was she doing, walking in circles for 17 days?
A Freeper with some knowledge and common sense posting a fine comment! Ahhh - a breath of fresh air. :) :)
(PS - they’re not pigs anymore - they are boars up to 400 pounds. And yes they are smart and will kill and eat you. The hunters loose lot’s of dogs.)
From Makawao all the way to Hana , it’s a vast trackless and uninhabited forest ,on th ed north slope of Haleakala volcano , above the strip of human inhabited region along the Hana Highway , and spots like Keanae
Our Polynesian boar do not get that big , nothing like the Alabama kine , but they are numerous and have ed the same teeth and eclectic dietary habits. They are cannibals. They also eat dead humans . While there are very cases of Hawaiian pigs making the humans dead ,I am sure that’s happened too , if the person is down and crawling ,like this gal was. Easy meat.
That’s “lose”. (Sorry to the spelling police.)
