Back when GE still had its plastics and appliance divisions, a rival appliance maker had a rule that GE plastics reps were forbidden to be anywhere other than the common area (cafeteria).
The reason for the rule was from the experience of any new innovation that the appliance maker that the plastics people happened to see would somehow wind up on GE appliances.
Industrial espionage has been a problem for a long time.
Where it differs with China is the sheer scale.
