Harriet Tubman won’t be featured on the $20 bill until 2028: Mnuchin

Anti-slavery activist Harriet Tubman won’t appear on US currency for nearly a decade, Treasury Secretary Steven Mnuchin said Wednesday.

An image of Tubman, a former slave who helped others escape to freedom through the Underground Railroad, was supposed to replace President Andrew Jackson on the $20 bill next year.

“The primary reason we’ve looked at redesigning the $20 bill is for counterfeiting issues,” Mnuchin said in front of Congress on Wednesday.

“Based upon this, the new $20 bill will now not come out until 2028,” he added.

President Trump criticized the plan to replace Jackson on the note during the 2016 presidential campaign.

I thought that idiocy was abandoned.

The Underground Railroad was financed by Northern industrialists who were afraid the South would build factories and man them with slaves.

Harriet Tubman was their facade.

BS. Jackson should remain on the $20 bill.

If they need to be P C, I would propose two women, of many, who immediately come to mind:

Molly Pitcher,
Betsy Ross

It would be interesting to see how many holier than thou FReepers would even recognize the names...no fair peeking!

All through school, my now grown children were taught (propagandized) more about Harriett Tubman than any of the Founding Fathers. Nothing against Harriett Tubman but the priorities for memorializing someone on our currency are highly suspect.

I’d rather have Molly Hatchet.

They'd be Flirtin' with Disaster if they tried that.

You’re probably right. How about the model on the original album cover of the self-titled Blind Faith record?

are bills with fewer counterfeit safety features being pulled from circulation asap ? And destroyed.

Or are they still in circulation.

If a 20 slightly wrinkled $50s from 1977 were spent, would a bank hold them and they get sent to the treasury to destroy?

Or are they still in circulation.

They remain in circulation until they are withdrawn through the normal wear and tear and destroyed by the Fed. The lifespan of an average twenty is about eight years.

If a 20 slightly wrinkled $50s from 1977 were spent, would a bank hold them and they get sent to the treasury to destroy?

Banks just send currency to their local Federal Reserve Bank. It's the Fed that weeds out worn out and damaged bills and who looks for counterfeit money.

but old bills do not have security features...

Why counterfeit a new bill versus an older bill. ( An 80’s or 90s bill would cause suspicious examination by someone)

Why counterfeit a new bill versus an older bill.

Counterfeiting is not the problem people think it is. The Fed estimates that there is about $150 million in counterfeit currency in circulation at any given time out of $4 trillion in total circulated currency. The Secret Service does a pretty good job of tracking down and arresting domestic counterfeiters while identifying foreign ones.

Fun fact: the $20 bill is the most counterfeited bill made in the U.S. while the $100 is the most counterfeited bill overseas. The reason for that is that the twenty is the most commonly used U.S. bill in the U.S. while the hundred is the most commonly used U.S. bill outside the country.

Don’t know Tubman’s record.

Look, we buy into this and Hillary won’t be far behind.

Not buying in...

Yet another chapter in the ongoing saga of Republicans adopting the heroes of the Left. You have to admire it. Wait long enough and Obama will be part of the “conservative” pantheon.

The main and possibly only reason that Harriet Tubman was remembered in the 20th century was due to Earl Conrad’s 1942 biography issued by International Publishers, the venerable publisher of works such as Trotsky’s ‘Literature and Revolution’, Stalin’s ‘Leninism’, and Bukharin’s popular page-turner ‘Historical Materialism: The Economic Theory of the Leisure Class’.

A sample of their current best sellers can be found here:

The next books on Tubman had to wait until the 21st century, at which point she is now worthy of supplanting the evil racist slaveowner and oppressor of American Indians Andrew Jackson.

Gayle King blamed Trump and said this was despicable - CBS This Morning has become unwatchable.
