I don’t quite follow. I never said that the man should not intervene. What I did say is that - as a general rule - do it with some sort of plan in mind. At least provide for the possibility of police assistance.
(By the way, I don’t know if the man called 911 first or not. The article didn’t say.)
If I saw kids harassing an elderly person I would have to say something to. I probably wouldn’t even think to call police before intervening either. Minutes, heck seconds, matter. Help needs to be there now. And an elderly person is fragile.
The fireman is used to being the rescuer. God bless him.
