Penny Wong blasts 'malicious' WeChat campaign spreading fake news about Labor

Penny Wong has blasted WeChat campaigns targeting Labor with fake news, as a new claim emerges warning refugees will soon outnumber Chinese Australians.

On Tuesday Wong, Labor’s foreign affairs spokeswoman, demanded Scott Morrison “rule out any Liberal party involvement in the malicious false content” and linked the messages to potential foreign interference in Australian democracy.

In one set of messages, seen by Guardian Australia, Liberal supporter Jason Zong cites Labor’s policy to increase the humanitarian intake to 32,000, claiming “in 10 years that will be 320,000 and that’s not including their relatives and four wives who can all immigrate”.

“After 10 years this group of refugees will surpass Australia’s entire Chinese immigrant population, and there will be more in the coming years and the taxpayers will have to pay for it,” he said.

On Sunday a WeChat message from Jennifer (Jing) Li emerged pushing a doctored Bill Shorten tweet stating “immigration of people from the Middle East is the future Australia needs”.

The tweet has also appeared on Gab, the far-right social media network resembling Twitter, although several users there noted it was fake and used the wrong handle for Bill Shorten.

Labor has written to TenCent, the Chinese multinational which created WeChat, raising concerns.

At a press conference in Melbourne, Wong said there are “deeply concerning reports about fake news and malicious content being spread on WeChat”.

“Our message to the prime minister is this: this is not what we do in Australia.

“We have robust political debates. We don’t have major political parties engaging in fake news on this media platform or any other media platform.

“It is incumbent upon Scott Morrison to rule out any Liberal party involvement in the malicious false content that is circulating on WeChat.”

Amusing article in which Australian Shadow Foreign Secretary Penny Wong of the Australian Labor Party (the Aussie left) attacks the Liberal Party (the Aussie right) for engaging in fear-mongering over the possibility of a Labor win bringing on an influx of hundreds of thousands of Muslim refugees. The Liberal (Aussie right-wing) functionary being attacked is a Chinese Australian who is quite possibly the reincarnation of Lee Atwater who may have gone further than the Willie Horton ads in his attacks on Labor (Aussie left-wing). Given that WeChat is mostly a Chinese-language platform used by Chinese immigrants and expats in Australia, it appears that there's a significant forum for right-wing appeals among newly-minted Australian Chinese citizens.

One of the funnier articles I’ve read about ethnic politicking in Australia. Stuff we don’t see any more stateside. The donors would simply evaporate and the party elders would rain a chorus of denunciations on the candidate who did this. Unless, of course, that candidate was a Muslim and she was denouncing Jewish influence.

I recommend reading the whole Guardian article. What the Liberal Party guy did is hilarious. Makes Willie Horton look tame.

I was watching the election night coverage on youtube.
In the chat window people kept calling her wennie pong instead of penny wong.

I was confused why until i remembered that australians use the word pong for a strong and horrible smell

Very clever. I bet this was a nickname that followed her all the way from childhood.

She’s a real nasty piece of work. She was part of a panel the night before the election, and at the end she refused to shake hands with the guy from the Liberal Party (aussie right wing).

From her Wikipedia entry, father’s ethnic Chinese Malaysian and mother’s Australian. This being Australia, I doubt there’s much residual sentiment re the old country (i.e. Malaysia), especially since she’s only half. No way of knowing, of course, but that’s true of anyone. Could Obama and Hillary have been more more pro-Russian if they were ethnic Russian? Plenty of Australian Labor Party pols have been panda huggers. The real problem is that she’s a member of Australia’s left-wing party, and the way left-wing parties have worked in the West since the end of WWII is they believe every dollar spent on defense is a dollar wasted. The CCP favors Labor for the same reason Putin favored Hillary - lower defense expenditures and a tendency to grovel. Guy like Trump - he says nice things about Putin and Xi, then kicks them in the nuts.

Was he the WeChat guy mentioned in this article? Really funny guy. I miss Lee Atwater - nobody does that kind of stuff any more - he’d be unemployable. Impressed that Australians can still get away with it. Glad they’re not as pozzed as the Brits, who have made this kind of language a prosecutable crime.

I believe virtually every leftist holding office today is likely to have questionable funding or support sources from either hostile entities (Soros) and/or nations (Red China, et al). The “big scandal” hanging over Joe Biden’s head is the fact he is a paid Red China agent/operative. His goal, once in as President, would be to pull out all the stops to assure they continue to flagrant screw us economically and also via all manner and sort of espionage. These folks are simply dirty, corrupt and morally bereft.

If the media did its job, they could easily connect the dots to expose this fraud and treason, but they’re just as corrupt and dirty as the left-winger pols they support, cover for and lie for (since they’re almost uniformally leftists).

I think these people would do what they’re doing anyway even if they weren’t being paid because that’s who they are. Being paid is just the cherry on the cake. Left-wingers really believe this crap. That’s what makes them so dangerous. Zealots are very convincing because they think they have Gaia on their side.

True, but many of them might not necessarily have the resources to run for office, which is not a cheap undertaking. The left is always remarkably well-funded. They do, after all, have the dark one on their side.

On election night every chance she got she whined about negative Liberal party ad campaigns reactivated the people away from voting for Labor. People are not as stupid or gullible as she believes. Nobody bought the lies from them about the Liberals having cut 349billion from health when they actually raised it by 60% in the time the Liberals have been in office. It seems if you are untrustworthy Ms Wong then people will not trust you. As simple as that.
