Illinois Republicans unhappy at the influence the Democrat-controlled city of Chicago holds over the state are looking at trying to blow the Windy City out of the state altogether -- despite the long odds that such a push would face.
A new report by Pew Trusts' Stateline shines light on an effort by the states GOP to turn the state red by turning the blue city into its own state.

BTW, here’s one Black Chicago district from the 1970s. They were electing a de facto Democrat “Independent” for the 3rd seat. The Republicans placed a distant 4th and 5th.

Curiously, the Black Republican in 4th place, Jerry Washington, once they rid the 3 seats per district, ran in a one-member seat in 1984 and won — as a Democrat.

Old district 29 did elect a Black Republican, but given he endorsed a Democrat for Congress during his service, was more than likely a puppet:

That “Republican” later ran as an Independent. Curiously, a Black Republican named Jesse Jackson (not our favorite rev) won the last election in 1980 before the switchover to single member seats.

Yes, you told me of that ages ago.
Seems it was an unusual circumstance, longtime GOP incumbent died right before the election and prick somehow finagled himself as the replacement in what must have been a corrupt process, I doubt he’d have won a regular primary.
I found the details

“David Shanahan died suddenly on Oct. 18, 1936—less than 16 days before the election. His name was removed from the ballot and the Republican Senatorial Committee for the Ninth District nominated Robert E. Rodgers as the GOP candidate. But the state certifying board did not act in time so the ballot line for the Repubicans was left blank. Daley was then working as budget planning assistant to Cook County Treasurer Joseph L. Gill.
Daley got the backing of the 11th Ward Democratic Organization to launch a write-in campaign for him on the blank Republican line. The plan worked. Daley received 8,539 write-in votes as a Republican whereas the endorsed Republican Rodgers got only 3,321 write-in votes. Daley was certified as the Republican winner for the third seat.”

Thanks alot “state certifying board”. No collusion from local Republicans, exonerated!!!! Witch hunt!!!
Rodgers ended up on the ballot as an Indie and placed 4th, I just endorsed him, posthumously, on Our Campaigns.
If you look at the vote totals in that district, you can see how irrelevant the GOP was there and how they could effectively be a puppet of or in collusion with the local Democrats.
