Advancing the narrative is far more important than making a profit.
Case in point, Vox on May 8 ran an article titled, "Disney put more than $400 million into Vice Media. Now it says that investment is worthless":
Just a few years ago, big media companies were falling over themselves to bet on Vice Media. Disney made the biggest bet, by putting more than $400 million into the swashbuckling digital publisher.
Now, Disney says all of the money it put into Vice has been incinerated: In investor filings Wednesday, Disney said it no longer thinks it will ever get any return on the investment it made in Vice a company that at one point was supposedly worth $5.7 billion. Even though their propaganda outlet is losing money hand over fist, George Soros and a group of investors poured $250 million into the outlet just days earlier.
From NewsBusters on May 8, "Soros Investment Helps Bail Out Flailing Vice Media": Vice Media just got some help from the biggest funder of the left: billionaire George Soros.
The edgy and controversial liberal media company raised $250 million in debt from a group of investors including Soros Fund Management LLC, 23 Capital, Fortress Investment Group LLC and Monroe Capital, according to the May 3, Wall Street Journal. Soros needs them to keep churning out propaganda like this:
On Wednesday, leftist propaganda outlet Salon also announced it's on the brink of bankruptcy.
(Remember, these companies are going bankrupt despite Google, YouTube, Apple, Facebook and Twitter rigging their entire platforms to suppress alt-media and favor their propaganda.)
From The Wrap, "Salon Media Announces $5 Million Sale, Bankruptcy and Liquidation Threatened If Deal Fails":

Sniff sniff......huh! Smells a lot like David Brock........its how he makes his mega millions. (Smear monies)
Besides, anything George Soros is megasuspect!!!!!
Time for us all to read Sharyl Attkissons book: The Smear
Somebody will pick up these nonprofitable liberal media companies. And they will again go bankrupt but after staying on air for quite a while. Every year some will die off. But every year others will be born a new.
By the way, that video is pretty racist. And I wonder if those people realize they have white ancestors. Its funny how few middle class blacks understand that, before the DNA test bursts their bubble.
I would recommend watching Tim Pool and his Youtube channels to get some insight on the Left and today’s media.
Just one video to get started.
Leftist Activists Have Taken Over Journalism, Here Is Your Proof

Tim, describes himself as “Left of Center” and seems to be on a mission to expose and destroy the “Indentitarian”, SJWs that are the real threat.
“Our Generation Is FAILING, Why Jordan Peterson Is One Remedy. Our greatest threat may be our own success. Bulldozer parents give rise to the regressive left, calls for massive government intervention, and censorship.”

You might go there out of curiosity if you didn’t know the agenda—but who thinks a title “Vice” is attracting most responsible adults.
Failure of labeling???
FWIW, Tim Pool used to work for Vice news.
He’s been attacked by the left as some “Alt-Right” adjacent nut.
He comes from the Left and attacks the left because they have gone off the rails.
In the process he admittedly reads Conservative news and is honest enough to say that the Leftist Media Lies and the Conservative Media is at least being truthful.
I discovered him the other day. Looks like he has plans to be a competitor.
No Doubt.
He’s a smart guy that is trying to build a Media empire in the vacuum between the far left idiots and what some people would call “Alt-Right” or “Fox News”.
He’s on to something and I wish him well.
It’s one of the two channels I’ve blocked. The other is OWN.
There was another article I read maybe 2 years ago about how Vice just squandered hundreds of millions. Big ideas and no execution. Tons of staffing and money burned on untested concepts. All they really did was put a weekly 30 minute show on HBO - why they needed all that money for an HBO news show is beyond me. I guess they wanted to control everything while most news providers outsource a great deal.
More to the point of the headline though, one major problem is the lack of access. Cable TV is a dinosaur but it’s still the #1 source of news dissemination. This includes the networks since almost nobody gets TV over antenna. The networks get a government license, so they are automatically suspect and won’t ever really ‘speak truth to power’. The cable companies control access and channel placement (and there are really only a small number who have control over what news channels can broadcast). They also have a government granted monopoly, and the largest of them have billions in various government contracts and licenses.
The internet could be a game changer, and is to a large degree, but it has reduced the value of news as a commodity product. Information can be exchanged freely and easily and quickly using new technologies. The behemoths of the internet and the media are fighting mightily to try to control that as well... and it is no surprise that these behemoths are also in bed with government for licensing and government technology contracts.
Personally I’d require any company that receives government money to have to respect civil rights including free speech, just like universities must do. I’d also force ATT and other distributors of content to divest from all content ownership. They can’t own the production and the exclusive means to distribute it (anti-trust law broke up the movie studio ownership of theaters on these same grounds - its anti-competitive). And that’s just for starters.
Yes, but they have been brainwashed to believe that their white ancestors were slave owners who raped their black slaves.
This is the case, even though a lot of blacks acknowledge that their Grandmother or Great-Grandmother was white.
I know it is hard to believe, but there are people in the ranks of poltical parties and movements who view government as the centrpiece of their careers, whether by employment or by grander schemes to have the government give them money to fritter away in salaries, benefits, and donations back to their government contacts.
They have discovered the perpetual money machine. And if something like Common Core doesn’t work out, then the bureaucrats can start something new and pull off the same scam in the name of helping the poor or society at large.
Of course. There are many such people in various aspects. I know a guy who’s entire business is helping other people write papers to get government grants.
I saw a clip the other day about the $800 million San Francisco “homeless industry”. The money is given by government to a half dozen or so groups, who each then ‘sub contract’ to another total of apx 3 dozen other groups... all these groups have administrators and staffs and overhead. And with all that money doled out, meanwhile, the courts say you can’t force people off the streets or stop people from shooting up drugs in the streets and leaving needles and human waste.
We’ve gone full mental as a society. I was a fan of the show Deadwood, about a mining town where people gathered to escape the corruption of eastern city life and pursue their own better life out west. But once the town grew they had to institute laws like “no crapping in the street”. We’ve totally regressed. And I have plenty of empathy and sympathy for people in need. It’s just that the system is designed to siphon all the money while making it impossibly hard for society to help anyone.
The first mistake was thinking that government can be of any help. It has a part, but not in this fashion. Whos government is it? And the health hazard of needles and waste and trash littered in the streets is totally ignored in favor of the ‘right to take a dump’ anywhere. It’s madness. Maybe one day the residents will have a “$hit-in” protest, everyone just lay logs in the street outside city hall.
