Pete Hegseth: Graduates, it's time to unlearn college
Fox News ^ | Pete Hegseth

Posted on 05/19/2019 9:48:05 AM PDT by RoosterRedux

First, you just wasted a lot of time and money. Plenty of students drift through four-year colleges because, well, that’s what you do. I did the same thing. Now you have a degree you didn’t really need, and mountains of debt to boot. A better option for many students is a non-ideological, private-sector vocational or trade school. Schools focused on specific skills that actually prepare you to get real jobs with great pay.

Predictably, Democrats want to destroy private-sector higher education in favor of their existing network of cash-machine indoctrination camps. Democrats are using a simple, but effective, playbook to destroy private sector higher education: define taxpaying colleges as evil, propose policies to restrict access to private career colleges and offer “free” public college to the masses as a solution. It’s false but sounds great. Nothing is free – you might not have learned that in Economics 101.

The mafia of higher education – just like government-run public high schools – seeks to demagogue and destroy all competing educational opportunities and choices. Our only option, at this level and every level of our education system, is to rebel. Start our own schools, advance for-profit colleges, homeschool our kids, and challenge the government-run, public-school orthodoxy.

*snip*

Finally, your real education starts now. No more safe spaces or trigger warnings. Your debt needs to be paid off, the world doesn’t care about your feelings, and your parents’ basement is embarrassing. You have your life in front of you – and a country that needs you. Get to work, follow your passions, and – if necessary – get the skills somewhere else that you actually need to achieve the American dream.

Pete........ EXCELLENT speech this AM. Saw it live. Way to GOOOOOOO. About time all of us “normal thinking, patriotic, America-loving deplorables” stand up to the radical left attempting to shame us into their way of thinking.

NOT going to happen. Time to push back and THAT is working, hence PDJT, the election in Australia another.

Radical Dems is NOT the way this country needs to go.

Kids without money are being put into debt for half their lives to get degrees in finger painting and quoting obscure literature by socialists and perverts. But they’re young and stupid so they fall for it.

Somehow I ended up listening to a part of an interview between David Brooks and Oprah Winfrey on her OWN channel this morning - on and on and on about how Brooks lost his way and didn’t have an anchor and went through a dark valley between two mountains and had to learn to be alone - stuff most people learn to get through and deal with early on by themselves if they don’t have their heads filled with a lot of abstractions and theories and philosophies and just plain words that obfuscate and complicate the problems - most kids would be better off spending their late teen years learning to do something with their hands, like framing a house or repairing a car - something with concrete results that they had agency in - than having their heads filled with sawdust at some college.....

I went to college for one reason, and one reason only: The U.S. Air Force would only accept college graduates for Pilot Training. For me, the decision was easy.

Take any of the following subjects and you’ll get a real education

Chemistry. Physics. Chemical engineering. Biology. Pharmacology. Nuclear engineering. Civil engineering.

Of course as an engineer with three degrees. That they paid me to get kind you

I can tell you that you can learn all of the subjects online auditing classes and many other ways that are basically free

Undergraduate degrees are essentially meaningless now anyway and are only a steppingstone to get a masters degree

What you want to do is get an education and a subject or they will pay you to go to graduate school

This is what the left wants to stop. Pass enough laws and rules and have a constantly offended and loud population so that the rest of the country can be turned as much as possible into what college campuses are now.

I have graduate degrees in electrical and nuclear engineering and a graduate certificate in political science. All done without safe spaces or any sort of political tilt. I had useful skills that I used to get off the farm. I paid off my reasonable loans.
Retired now and doing well.
Learn useful skills, anything else should be only maybe a hobby.

When applying for a job don’t list your parent’s home address for the past decade. Employers don’t want a kid that has been a basement deweller.

Great commencement speech this morning by Pete Hegseth. Time for “higher education” to return to classical liberal traditions but I don’t think today’s academia can find its way back. Since the 1960’s, universities have quadrupled (or much more) their overhead and embraced all this crappy pop culture and political correctness... I don’t think there’s a viable path back.

Most of what we need can be learned on the job after high school. College is for engineers, programmers, doctors, etc. Not future office workers. In high school they should be teaching reading, writing and arithmetic and history but we know that is no longer the case.
Paying 50k or 100k to learn what in college?
What should have been taught in high school!

Where I work the manager is taking way to long to hire someone, nearly 3 months so far, asking for too many skills that are not needed at work but looks good on the job posting. (The problem at work is the manager who drives people away with his anger and insults).

We hear the complaints from him and the supervisor about the applicants are too qualified and will leave soon or not enough when we know any one new would have to learn on the job since it is all proprietary programs. I could teach anyone in short order.

I imagine the person who is in massive debt showing up to a job and realizing they did not need college at all and being pretty upset with being in debt.

It’s ironic that the Left prides itself on being “progressive” when it supports the most dated, outmoded and ineffective institution there is — big government.

Remember ww2? Farm kids, kids who did not own a car who were taught how to fly airplanes, navigate ships etc. do all sorts of things. The military churned them out by the hundreds of thousands in short order. College today 4 years and what you learn is how long it will take to pay off the huge debt with no real skills.

Griggs vs. Duke Power Co. in 1971 pretty much ended the use of IQ and other skills tests during hiring...so a college degree became the “alternate” test of a potential employee’s competence and teachability.

My own boss laments the poor quality of most fresh college graduates these days (even at the Masters level)...he’s said more than once that, if they’d allow him, he’d prefer to find a high school student that showed potential and apprentice them.
