Even before the president did a microphone check for his immigration and border security speech in the White House Rose Garden Thursday afternoon, his critics were saying they hated his plan. Good. That means he must be more right than wrong.
Think about it. The people who are telling him he has no idea how to do this are the same Washington crowd that catastrophically failed at least three times to push through major reform legislation. And their number one criticism is wait for it that he didnt listen to them.
On the one side is the apoplectic crowd, distraught that the president didnt reduce the number of legal immigrants. For starters, they might have praised the parts of the plan that will combat the real problem: illegal immigration. More to the point, the president made the right call to transform the legal system first to one bringing in workers based on merit.
Today almost 90 percent of legal immigrants are extended family members, visa lottery winners and status adjustments. About 10 percent is based on merit. Lets change that. Get the baseline right. Stop the mass illegal immigration. Then we can all argue about the right numbers based on numbers and facts and the performance of the economy.

Good article, thanks 2DV.
The proposal to increase by a massive amounts of college educated legal immigrants(so called skilled immigrants) and still keep the H-1B visa too is a death knell to young American college graduates, their earning potential, opportunities and wages.
Let's not kid ourselves this is corporate welfare at it's worst.
Trump's first mistake is the "comprehensive" approach where he is combining legal immigration reform with birder security! THEY ARE SEPARATE ISSUES SO TREAT THEM AS SUCH. Amateur mistake on his part.
It's a question of priorities. Waiting lists for chain migration applications (adult children, siblings, married children) are now almost 20 years for places like Mexico, and that's with 90% of green cards being given to these applicants. Reduce that proportion from 90% to 50%, and that waiting list goes to 40 years, i.e., enough to make many not even apply.
Country | New Cut-off Date | Old Cut-off Date | Change in Wait Time |
---|---|---|---|
General Category | 1-Aug-12 | 1-May-12 | –3 months |
China | 1-Aug-12 | 1-May-12 | –3 months |
India | 1-Aug-12 | 1-May-12 | –3 months |
Mexico | 22-Sep-97 | 22-Jun-97 | –3 months |
Philippines | 22-Jul-07 | 1-Jul-07 | –3 weeks |
This month, most countries in this category double their forward movement in February. Mexico, however, shows strongest movement, leaping forward by 3 months, compared with only 2 weeks in February:
Country | New Cut-off Date | Old Cut-off Date | Change in Wait Time |
---|---|---|---|
General Category | 8-Sep-06 | 22-Aug-06 | – 2 weeks, 3 days |
China | 8-Sep-06 | 22-Aug-06 | – 2 weeks, 3 days |
India | 8-Sep-06 | 22-Aug-06 | – 2 weeks, 3 days |
Mexico | 15-Jan-96 | 22-Dec-95 | –3 weeks, 3 days |
Philippines | 1-Jan-96 | 22-Aug-95 | –4 months, 1 week, 3 days |
All countries in this category advance, with strongest movement for the Philippines. Mexico finally makes progress after a 5-month standstill:
Country | New Cut-off Date | Old Cut-off Date | Change in Wait Time |
---|---|---|---|
General Category | 22-Sep-05 | 22-Jun-05 | –3 months |
China | 22-Sep-05 | 22-Jun-05 | –3 months |
India | 8-Jul-04 | 22-Jun-04 | –2 weeks, 2 days |
Mexico | 8-Feb-98 | 8-Feb-98 | No change |
Philippines | 1-Jan-96 | 1-Oct-95 | –3 months |
Most countries in this category make much healthier advances than in February, while Mexico makes no progress for the fourth month in a row:
1. I disagree. The example of Japan should loom large in you mind. Low birth rate and no immigration lead to a very bad outcome.
2. With our low birth rate, just who do you think is going to be paying the SS taxes to help you in your retirement?
3. Importing skilled workers is importing R voters.
Importing skilled workers is importing R voters.
BS. I am in IT, all the Indians and Pakis with green card that obtained citizenship are all rabid Democrats.
Birth rates go up and down. The worst thing is trying to compensate with aliens. As a globalist you are the political enemy of nationalist. Odd bedfellows in the GOP.
It’s written.....”Even before the president did a microphone check for his immigration and border security speech his critics were saying they hated his plan”.....
Of course they did.... just further attempts to distract themselves from their own feelings of helplessness, powerlessness, inadequacy and shame because all their focus is simply on stopping anything Trump does or says and they haven’t been successful.... Thus they are hostile and aggression toward HIM/US because he’s undoing what they’ve spent decades creating for themselves and their cabal.
It’s a bad plan he son-in-law came up with. I am glad its DOA.
Anyone want to imagine how the federal government will decide which immigrants have more “merit” than others?
Maybe the new SAT college admissions test, which includes an “adversity” and “privilege” scoring adjustment!
Win or lose in 2020, Trump will be the last Republican president.
New immigrant citizens vote 80% for the Democrat Party, including Asian Indians, who are the best educated and best paid immigrants in America.
Japan has the third largest economy in the world, and the same GDP per capita as France and the UK.
Re: Just who do you think is going to be paying the SS taxes to help you in your retirement?
I have a better question - who is going to be stupid enough to immigrate to the USA in 2040 to pay SocSec and Medicare to millions of angry Hispanic and Black Socialists?
Re: Importing skilled workers is importing R voters.
Asian Indians are the best educated and best paid immigrants in America. They voted 80% to REELECT Obama in 2012!
There must be a carefully controlled system. NO immigration is dumb, for the reasons you mention, but it is not the solution to a falling birth rate.
Replacing Americans, with American values, with Pakistanis or Indians or Africans without American values is not feasible either.
A key element is to have a reasonable immigration plan with HEAVY doses of Americanization AND exclusion of Islam or other religions/ideologies that are hostile to Christianity and American values.
