SAT to Give Students ‘Adversity Score’ to Capture Social and Economic Background
Wall Street Journal ^ | May 16, 2019 | Douglas Belkin

Posted on 05/16/2019 3:10:29 AM PDT by reaganaut1

The College Board plans to assign an adversity score to every student who takes the SAT to try to capture their social and economic background, jumping into the debate raging over race and class in college admissions.

This new number, called an adversity score by college admissions officers, is calculated using 15 factors including the crime rate and poverty levels from the student’s high school and neighborhood. Students won’t be told the scores, but colleges will see the numbers when reviewing their applications.

Fifty colleges used the score last year as part of a beta test. The College Board plans to expand it to 150 institutions this fall, and then use it broadly the following year.

How colleges consider a student’s race and class in making admissions decisions is hotly contested. Many colleges, including Harvard University, say a diverse student body is part of the educational mission of a school. A lawsuit accusing Harvard of discriminating against Asian-American applicants by holding them to a higher standard is awaiting a judge’s ruling. Lawsuits charging unfair admission practices have also been filed against the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and the University of California system.

The College Board, the New York based nonprofit that oversees the SAT, said it has worried about income inequality influencing test results for years. White students scored an average of 177 points higher than black students and 133 points higher than Hispanic students in 2018 results. Asian students scored 100 points higher than white students. The children of wealthy and college-educated parents outperformed their classmates.

“There are a number of amazing students who may have scored less [on the SAT] but have accomplished more,” said David Coleman, chief executive of the College Board.

College Board President: “A number.... who MAY have scored less but who have accomplished more”.... Alright NAME specific examples of such students.... precisely and scientifically databased accurately that they EXIST!

Oh, no— the “privacy” of the individual must be respected. IOW, a@@hole you cannot prove a THING of what you are now making policy, based on OUTCOMES which will make you feel good and give maximum subsidies to colleges who accept your “scores” and adjustments.

So— now— since the “disadvantaged” didn’t have Hollywood bribing money for their idiot stoner kids to get into a top school by paying off a sports coach (regardless of their SAT, normalized or not)... can now get in on the basis of their subjective “scoring” secretly done by unnamed and un-justified methodology. Ridiculous.

Well, the kid who doesn’t get points for adversity...doesn’t that give him an adversity?

A high Adversity score is from a blue Democrat inner city sh@thole.

A low Adversity score is from a red Republican suburban success.

Adversity Score: Low = red. High = blue.

Instead of adversity, just post who they voted for.

Matt, I am glad that you brought up the issue of IQ. While you could arguably dismiss the correlation between SAT scores and IQ with a small sample, when you have millions taking the tests and IQ tests having been given to millions, as well, then you can have a high degree of confidence in the results. And those results very clearly speak to a direct correlation between high IQ and high SAT scores.

I hope that someone shoes the College Board, and whatever university they are denied entry to based upon this nonsense. The SAT is supposed to measure knowledge and intelligence, as a means of predicting performance in college. If someone does well on the SAT, it is likely that they will do well in college, provided that they put in a reasonable effort to do so (and no academic tests can measure weather someone is going to be motivated or not). With the large increase in conservative judges over the last two years, we finally have a shot at destroying the entire concept of affirmative action, and returning to what made this country the most successful nation in history: merit.

It’ll never happen. IQ will continue to be an unspeakable 3rd rail, even while our elites add points to those with lower cognitive ability.

Expect more Boing 737 Max fiascos, collapsing bridges, etc.

And don’t expect great results in surgery.

RACE SHOULD NEVER be a factor

“Students won’t be told the scores, but colleges will see the numbers when reviewing their applications.” Looks like a system designed to be abused...

This won't survive legal challenge. People have a right to see their scores. What is proposed here is like the credit rating agencies handing out secret FICO scores.

You may not like your score, but you have a right to know what it is, and see the underlying data on which it is based.

I think you’re on to something...when the “academies” are all those who can’t make it on their own...they will self destruct, maybe.

I get so confused. The demoncrats tell me I need to kill babies in order to be a good person. I need to take peoples hard earned money away from them in order to be prosperous. And, I need to take away peoples guns in order to keep them safe.

Exactly what our daughter did. 2 years JC Honors Program, transfer to major University. Degree in Business and Finance. Now, 33 years old and a millionaire.

It can be done.

Imagine if seniors in high school, who hate going to class this time of year, banned together and boycotted the College Board Test and the test prep industry.if they united under the banner of #gap year, the liberal corrupt universities would freak and the rest of us wouldn’t have to pay for all the failed student loans.

So if you’ve worked your a** off in high school, held a part time job, helped mom and dad around the house.....the “bum” down the road might beat you out of YOUR place in college cuz he/she/it did all the opposite things.

You just described a young female, we know here in California

In her entire school life, she made one B+ and then all A’s. She worked her junior and senior year in high school after school, weekends, holidays and in the summers.

In public school before she went to a top private school, she was the top math student in her class of 500.

In the private high school she was one of 10 with the same grades, one B+ and the rest all A’s. They were the #2 student. They were graduated with highest honors.

Yet, she could not get accepted to any California Nursing School, their stupid 5-7 year program, loaded with liberal BS courses.

Her mother told one of the so called counselors, that her daughter didn’t attend a school where riots were the agenda of the day. So anyone who attended those schools, didn’t riot, nor kill someone and was a minority got accepted to California universities.

So they had her apply to good Nursing Schools out of state.

She was accepted at every school and got many scholarship offers. The one she went to, gave her a $100k scholarship over 4 years. Their RN program has zero liberal courses, and they expect their grads to be graduated in 4 years.

She just finished her second year with excellent grades and is on target to be graduated in 2 more years. The school has a 60% dropout rate in the first two years.

She is heading home and will be working at 2 jobs. Places where she worked in High School and the past two summers and holidays.

Next comes "Economic Empowerment Acts" like they have in South Africa.

Being a despised minority in your own lands comes with unpleasant consequences.

Well, sort of. In addition to being financially successful, she is a nice person. Kind, giving, compassionate and helpful. But it is all tempered with common sense.
